Fluctuating egfr

hi wondering about these jumps in numbers. Taken almost monthly went up from the 40's (AKI) and past 3 months went 57, 55, then 70! I'm always well hydrated for test. Do you think 70 is mistake ( never been that high!) And how come big jump? I'm 75 yrs old and there is possibility kidney problems stemmed from covid. Any thoughts? Much appreciate your support. Thank you.

Was it the same blood draw facility. I too had a large increase from 60 to 70. I am 81 years old. I am waiting for my next eGFR test.

There is also a change in the equation. Here is link to article on the new eGFR calculation.

My mum's eGFR also jumped (to 76 from 59 just 3m earlier) a while ago after a more gradual increase over ~6 years. Whilst seemingly good news at the time, it subsequently dropped to 46 a few months later before stabilising just below 60.

There may be genuine reasons for the 30-40% swings eg hydration. But I think best to plot on a graph so we now consider mum ~60.

It's hard to say about your eGFR. Sometimes it is lab error, etc. That is why when doctors diagnose CKD is not from a single blood/urine test, but from tests done over time to see a trend.

Yes, trying to note my trend which does seem to flucuate. This has only been going on over course of last 10 months as I say possibly since my last Covid case last october. Thanks for rezponding.

My GP told me that EGFR can be affected if you eat meat the day before the test. The EGFR number comes about from and equation that takes into account the waste products in your blood and meat increases this.

Interesting. I'm not a meat eater. Once in a while a small bit of chicken. But I will pay more attention to what I eat before test. Thank you.

Hi,

What you do and ate before bloods being taken does influence your kidney figures. Try to have blood drawn at the same time each day and ensure you have been eating and doing the same things each time. This will give you a better result as any results are just a snap shot of your system at the time of bloods being drawn.

Cheers
