While doing Peritoneal Dialysis, do I need to change to Hemodialysis before transplant?

No. Some surgeons will leave the PD catheter in place for PD, others open an access in the neck for HD. My hubby's PD cath was removed and given a neck access for possible HD at the time of transplant. However, he never needed any dialysis. His new deceased donor kidney began working immediately. So just keep on doing what you're doing. No adjustments needed.

Just curious. If kidney is located in stomach area, why insert catheter in neck ??

The neck area is apparently used for very short term or emergency use in case hemodialysis or other procedures requires direct access to a blood vein. We assume his peritoneal catheter was removed probably because the incision for his transplant was located right next to it and removing the tubing may have freed up space inside the body for the new kidney too. He left with no ports or caths; it was really nice!

Definitely ask your transplant team members. Mine suggested PD as the preferable option when possible; although, I made it to my transplant without dialysis. Since my deceased donor kidney began working immediately, there was no need to start dialysis in the hospital post transplant for me either. I have to say, these transplsnt teams are highly trained and know what they are doing. Regardless of your specific situation, if you are found to be eligible for a transplant, they will be able to work with you on dialysis and so forth. So, just talk with them and follow their guidance.

Hi, I'm now 6 and a half months post transplant. I was on PD, they kept my PD tube in just in case I needed to dialyse til my new kidney started working. I had a water infection the week after transplant so although my kidney started working after a few hours post transplant, the infecting upset it a bit so I dialysed for 3 days until they did a biopsy ( just to check on kidney) and found all was ok and kidney was working again. I then had my tube out at the same tone as the urinal stent. However, best check with your renal team as this was just my experience so can't say it's always done this way. xx

I did PD for 16 months then had a transplant never on hemo. So O would say no but your doctor makes those calls based on your health and body.
