Relation between reduction on blood thinning meds and reduction in GFR at the same time.

My GFR dropped to 51 after finishing my chemo and a change from anticoagulant injections to 10 mg per day apixaban 2 years ago. Had a DVT whilst undergoing chemo even though i tried to stay active. Four months ago my apixipan was reduced again to 5mg a day. My GFR has gone down to 41 not long after. Has anyone else had this reaction to a reduction in their blood thinning medication. Not seen a renal consultant and not booked in to see one. Getting lower back ache and feeling a bit nausea at times. I'm 62 years old, cycle 12 miles 3 times weekly, go on x trainer and rowing machine for 20min ea per night. Don't smoke, don't drink, reduced red meat intake and don't have dairy milk anymore . Blood pressure 115/79 pulse 67.

Any clues.....????

I don't know of any reason why reducing apixaban would make your eGFR drop. I was prescribed 10 mg apixaban for occasional afib, but anything over 2.5 mg causes intense itching. Anyway, no change of eGFR throughout my failed attempt at apixaban. I would make a wild guess that thinner blood may be a little easier on the kidneys, since nobody else has responded. Or it may be a coincidence. It sure sounds like an impressive amount of exercise, maybe (another wild guess) increased exercise as you feel better, combined with the chemo history, is stressing your heart a touch, which in turn gives you a temporary eGFR dip??

Thank you for your reply. When I was diagnosed with 3a I wondered if it was down to training. It stated level at that for nearly two years. When my 4 monthly cancer check of my bloods were due I stopped all exercise for two weeks. This was for me to prove to myself that my theory was correct. I was taken back when I was told I had dropped down to 3b. The only other thing that coincides with my results are a reduction in my blood thinners.

Waiting to see if I'll get referred to the renal department by the cancer department. If not ill go to my GP.
