Between my nephrologist, urologist, and PCP my labs are done every three months. Every now and again there will be some overlap and generally, the numbers from each draw support the others.

Sometimes mine are done every 6 months depending on results. Being on Medicare in an ACO might enter into when they are done also. I could pay to have them done if I feel the need.

I twill vary depending on your condition and your treatment strategy. I currently am getting mine every other week, but that is due to me being highly proactive and tracking the impact of a supplement to reduce nitrogenous wastes. Outside of that my Nephrologist gets labs done every 3 months and my PCP get them done every 2 from a different lab. I've used the results to continuously tweak my diet and improve my overall health and kidney function. Many people get theirs far less often, either every 3, 4 or 6 months.

Thanks a lot Dadvice, I follow your videos in YouTube and they are very illustratives.

hi Jaibo,

Everyone is different. Since I have been stable for now 2 years, I only go every 6 months. But if something was feeling wrong, I have prn on all of my renal tests.

If you're stage 2 - 4, I would get labs done at LEAST every 6 months. Having said that, I was supposed to get labs done at the beginning of December, but my PCP was switched on me and I just had them done a few days ago....after a period of 8.5 months. Thankfully, everything is holding steady. The one thing I don't like is that the new lab rounds both creatinine and cystatin C to the nearest .1 instead of .10 (hundredths). I think my creatinine was perhaps rounded down to 1.3 while my cystatin may have been rounded up to 1.0

My priors were 1.34 and .93 respectively. Age 61 with GFR 59....which is where I was diagnosed at 3 years ago. Have done nothing more than eased up on the protein, including animal protein, eaten more fruits and veggies, been trying to get at least 2 liters of water a day (should be closer to 2.5-3), and been more diligent about exercise. Fingers crossed for the future.

Which test you people do periodically? Only egfr or BUN test also?

CBC Comp renal panel urinalysis vit d and pth every six months. eGFR is in the urine collection. I forget the exact name they use for it.

I am not diabetic and normal blood pressure. So it may be different but those are the basics for me.

Hi jaibo. All the replies here are good (they remind me to exercise, etc). I have stage 4 and my nephrologist sees me every six months. Two weeks before, I make my own appointment to have my blood drawn. Proteinuria and creatine have been a problem so I have to watch and/or eliminate red meat, dairy, shellfish. My egfr fluctuates from 23 to 36 so that furthers the need to watch and/or avoid sugar, salt, bad fats and too many carbs. That said, however, because I love to cook but had lost the will to both cook and eat healthily, I am using every resource possible (this site, Davita, the internet, my RD daughter etc) to follow delicious recipes. I've lost ten pounds and can lose a few more. With this site's wonderful people's encouragement, I'm back to exercising and will soon decide whether to go back to swimming at the gym (mostly for my back but good for all over toning as well since both my PCP and nephrologist commanded [yep- commanded} me to go). I wish you the very best and keep posting. You never know when something you're going through, a question or even your experiences can help someone.

Thanks a lot for your reply, I hope you get better as soon as posible.

I would say that answer is probably different for all of us and their doctor's preferences. When I was first diagnosed I went every three weeks then every six weeks. Now I am stable for three years but my doctor and I agree every six months is good.
