Transplant in 4 days

I'm very blessed & grateful that I found my match and have transplant scheduled on Dec 8th! I'm wondering if there are any special things that I might need that others found helpful to have during recovery time. ( comforting or assistance)

Hey there! So very happy for you!! I just had a transplant in June and there are some clothing items I would really recommend because of the incision. Certain underwear was golden. Anything seamless at top without an elastic band. If you want I can photograph some examples. A real lifesaver!! Also, t-shirt or tunica dresses were great. The catheter the first four days can also work with shorts or jogging pants, but dresses were the easiest. Again, so very happy for you. If you have any other questions, I would be happy to help.

I hadn't thought about the undergarments but makes sense. The catheter was just during hospital stay right? Or did you have it at home too? I'll be sure to pack loose fitting clothes. Thanks!

The post surgery clothes are important. If you live somewhere warm, I would recommend some light long sleeve shirts, to protect your skin. A wide brimmed hat is helpful too. I had my transplant in September and wore a fedora for my daily walks. Comfortable shoes are important.

I found that I had energy and motivation that I haven’t had in years, but it took time to build up stamina. So, things to do are important. I borrowed a guitar and did puzzles. I also worked on learning new computer skills. Anything to keep the time “resting” from being boring. I was also a long way from home and cooped up in a hotel room.

Because I was walking every day, I liked to find interesting routes for my walks.

If you are near home, food will probably be easy. If you have to travel, consider ways to get good food daily. I was stuck with an Indian restaurant and a McDonalds close by. Even at the Indian restaurant it was hard to maintain a good diet.

After I got out of the hospital, the hardest part for me, was not doing too much. I had several setbacks, because I felt so good, I couldn’t sit still.

Thank you! I ordered a small treadmill for walking as it is winter & cold here. I'm also going to relearn how to crochet to help pass time.

I'd suggest packing a few throw-away panties. A new kidney can produce lots of urine and it's just a nice backup if you're in a car, in a traffic jam, or many miles from home and can't get to a relatively clean bathroom. Another thing I'd recommend is an extra long cellphone charger cord since the equipment in a hospital room often takes up the plugs near the hospital bed. And it's always nice to have a pillow and blanket in the car for napping or propping behind a sore area when the need comes up. May your transplant and recovery go well!

Praying for a successful surgery and speedy recovery. Lots of rest and a meal train to help with cooking really makes things easier.

Update: Transplant Surgery went extremely well. My daughter was released in 2 days and myself after 5 days. Numbers went from renal failure to normal function in just 3 days! Such a miracle and blessing. I already notice changes in better skin color, no swelling and no joint pain or stiffness. We are both recovering together and doing well. Thank you everyone for all the well wishes and prayers, they are very much appreciated.❤
