Secondary infections ?

Has anyone experienced multiple secondary infections while on high dose of prednisone and antibiotics ? It’s been 6 weeks on medication and have already had yeast infection, oral thrush and now shingles ? I understand my immune system is compromised now but is the next 6 months going to be infection after infection ?

Had you had your shingles vax and still got shingles? I had both doses (not transplanted yet) and have had shingles in the past so I hope I never see it again.

No, usually the first 6 months are rough as far as getting infections etc. Usually that first year the transplant doc will reduce the dose of your meds. Takes awhile to figure out the right dose for you. That helps and infections of any kind will be almost non-existent.

I am 23 years post transplant and did have a case of strep throat this summer. However, I have never gotten the dreaded COVID. I am vaccinated for the flu, Shingles and multiple doses & boosters of COVID vaccine. Take precautions and get your vaccinations.

My hubby got back-to-back urinary tract infections - both bacterial and fungal in nature - following transplant. We've since supplemented with probiotics and everything straightened out and is wonderful. Not all transplant centers allow probiotics, so we're lucky in that regard. He, too, like WYOAnne has never had Covid but he keeps up-to-date on all vaccines including shingles and pneumonia He's already received the updated flu and Covid vaccines and is scheduled for another Evusheld antibody treatment in November.

I got horrible oral thrush on high dose Prednisolone and none of the prescribed stuff cleared it up. Someone recommended some " CandiClear Complex " which contains Caprylic Acid which finally gave some relief

I've been on 2 to 5 mg of prednisone for years, and I get the worst and longest version of every little virus that comes by, then a lupus flare once my immune system kicks in. I had shingles (just once) and thrush, was hospitalized for a month with meningitis and have several chronic yeast annoyances. When I reduce prednisone, the lupus flares up. Anyway, my only solution has been to eat the healthiest diet possible. Right now I'm at the end of a cold so my mood is on the self-pitying side, but I do try to stay upbeat and relaxed and exercise regularly which does help with general health and mood. Good luck.
