Hi Jodaer, My husband started Farxiga in September of this year. Seems to be fine for him. He has not had any yeast infections or issues of any kind. HIs sugar was pretty erratic with highs and lows before. That seems to have stopped. He still has a high when he eats crap but not like before. He hasn't had labs so we do not know how it is for his A1c but his daily glucose readings are great. He is at a A1c of 6.9 in September

Thanks for the info... I'm nervous about it but will try it. I'm spilling a lot of protein, I hope it helps.

I am always nervous about trying a new drug. But I have been involved in clinical research on these new drugs and what they are discovering is amazing. I am on a GLP-1. I had to fight for it because my doctor did not have the information and was worried. Since I have been on it, I have cut down my insulin and my numbers are very stable and glucose numbers are getting lower.

That's great news... hope it stays that way. Keep me posted.

Hello .. these are questions you should be asking your medical team first. They are the experts and in a better position to advice you.

If other side effects come out - again tell your medical team. They are first in the list.

What we share are our experiences, our body, our medical team. It is very strange to self diagnose and medicate based on what you read.

However, use what we share to refer to your medical team. They are your lifeline.

Hope this helps.

OK, agree, I've talked with my doc and he said try it and see, we also talked side effects. What I'm looking for now is other patients experience.

I have been taking it since August no side effects at all. My gfr went up from 30 to 35 still spilling protein. Don't have diabetes, blood sugar normal. Nothing really has changed much.

userotc in reply to itzmich

If youre not diabetic and nothing has changed, please explain why you are using the drug? My mum also doesnt have diabetes or even pre-diabetes but close to the latter with stubborn hba1c = 41 mmol/mol and she also spills protein at an increasing rate, latest 24h = 0.44 g/24h. We're trying to lower blood glucose and so proteinuria with diet/wellbeing.

I totally agree with the concept of your point (see my reply to itzmich) but do you have a relevant link? My mum is 66.

Please explain why you take a diabetic drug when not even pre-diabetic diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1.... Apologies if Ive asked you previously.

itzmich profile image
itzmich in reply to userotc

It is not just a diabetic drug it also has been approved for cronic kidney disease. Not a cure just helpful in some cases.

userotc profile image
userotc in reply to itzmich

Sorry I dont know too much about drugs but I now realise it works by helping the kidneys get rid of glucose from your bloodstream" drugs.com/farxiga.html.

Please keep me posted, particularly if it starts to reduce your proteinuria as that is key for my mum and we are adopting the same approach of trying to reduce her proteinuria via glucose reduction albeit without drugs (at this stage).

Yes, SGLT-2 inhibitors have proven beneficial for those with and without ckd.

I have a Nephrologist and his group of specialists for almost 15 years. 13 years before my transplant. 2 years after and going.

I have CKD for 35 years and changed Urologists/nephrologist 7 times. Everytime the doctor stopped listening to me or giving me the answers that satisfies me - I move on.

If you cannot trust your medical team - you have to solve this root cause issue first. This forum is here to provide our experiences, research, readings, that may or may not work for you. You have to digest them and consult your Nephrologist. This forum is not for diagnosis purposes and is not intended to replace a good medical team dedicated to your well being.

You may want to read my earlier posts on my journey towards finally finding the right medical team for me. Others have also shared theirs and are good reads. Finding the right medical team is the key to better medical care and better options and decisions.

Hope this helps.

Ok agree again. I'm going to be moving in a few months to another state. I will look up your posts on finding doctors.

If this reply was to me, then thanks, but where do you get your (mis) information? A1c is an average of your glucose levels for 3 months. It is an average. Normal A1C is 5.6. That is what someone without diabetes will have. Above that to 5.9 is considered pre-diabetes which is a misnomer for "you are on your way to be classified as diabetic." Anything over 6 is diabetic. Since sugar is passed out through the kidneys, high levels of sugar impact and strain the kidney. Which is why even low numbers can have an effect. The other impact of diabetes is more than I wish to go into here. But even a slightly elevated glucose over time will impact the body. The other thing with these new drugs is that they are good for the heart as well as the kidney.

I'm on it and have little to no side effects. More frequent urination. I do not have diabetes but it seems to be helping or preventing my CKD from progressing. So far so good.

I have been on the full dosage since June 2021. I have IGA and not diabetic. I’m 36 and mostly vegetarian. I started with a 28 egfr and pretty much stayed there until my last reading which was last week and was a 36 egfr. No side effects and it seems to be working.

MPS, that is a good result. I hope it stays up and goes higher.

Sorry Fatbuddy but I disagree. If my A1C was 6.9 I would definitely want something to help get it down over food and exercise. Not saying that we don't need to exercise or eat healthy but 6.9A1C isn't all that great.

Thanks to everyone who answered me. I will start it tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed for no side effects and good results. Happy New year to you all

You never mentioned low dose of metformin. At 78 I don't mind taking the med if I can enjoy some good food now and again. Due to pain I can't do much in the way of exercise.

Did you start off on the lowest dose possible?

jodaer profile image
jodaer in reply to RoxanneKidney

If this is for me, then No, 10 mg. Partly I think because that is the sample he gave me.

RoxanneKidney profile image
RoxanneKidney in reply to jodaer

What I learned is always start small and add. That was the mistake drs were making with my ACE. So it was too much and I would vstop taking it. You might not have the issues vwith the smaller dose bc that might be all your body needs.

Just a regular fiber supplement is good too and mich much cheaper. With added fiber there is an extra incentive to drink water. For example even those the bottle says take three, I take one because I do eat beans and veggies etc. Good for your gut health.
