Mom 88 has one kidney not working and one kidney with blockage.
They plan to drain the kidney with a catheter Don't know what that procedure is called ? I hope its not Nephrostomy! They also did an endoscopy and took samples of her pancreas, & thyroid to the pathology. this was due to a result from water on the lung -------when they drained it they said they found cancer cells in the fluid. } She is in zero pain and has no symptoms at all. She was exercising today in the hall of the hospital. She wanted to prove she could. I'm so scared for her and I'm in another state taking care of my handicapped husband And I want her to live with me . Her Gfr was 23 when she entered the hospital. But I'm sure
its lowered a lot since this first week there. She had every scan and test imaginable. Her previous doctor had prescribed her Nitrofurantoin 100 mg 1x a day Which he told her to take for two YEARS! To prevent UTI 's I'm almost certain this destroyed her kidneys. i didn't know she was taking this and when I found out I told her to ask her doctor to get off it.!!! She stopped about two months ago. The procedure is tomorrow and does anyone know how much pain is involved.? Thanks

Thanks for this update. This definitely sounds stressful. Hopefully your mother will agree to come and live with you after she is out of the hospital. I’m also hoping they find the source of the dancer cells and it’s treatable.
Im so sorry for your mothers pain! Hard to believe she says she feels ok? This happened to me many years ago: kidney was huge with infection, and for me, completely unusable. I was pregnant so no draining, but i stayed on the nitrofurantoin for many months to keep from going septic until I had the kidney removed. The infection can spread to the other kidney as well. I’d want to get that cleared up pronto…as for the catheter, I found some information you may find useful but the Urologist or nephrologist will go over this with you. mskcc.org/cancer-care/patie...
I hope the procedure went well. I thought I would say that my mother had bladder cancer and it is now in remission after a series of chemo washes. However, that made her bladder so tiny it gave her lots of UTI's which she had NitroF quite often (never more than 2 weeks at a time tho). Now she has kidney stents which drain the urine from the kidneys to the bladder. She also has an in-dwelling catheter - so the urine literally drains freely from the kidneys, through the stents, into the bladder and straight into a catheter into a bag on her leg. She needs the stents changed every 6 months under GA tho. I don't know if any of that might help or be of interest to you. I didn't realise you could get kidney stents. Good luck on your journey
Hi gisella, I'm sorry you're going through this and I hope your mother feels well and better with each day. Can you please tell us how they discovered the issues with your mother even with no symptoms?
