How much water should my dad drink a day?

My dad got diagnosed with a stage 4 kidney disease on January 18, 2021. His GFR is 18%. He is 54 years old, weighs around 80 kg, and is 167-168 cm tall. He kinda had diabetes before but the condition seems to have got better. He currently has high blood pressure and has swelling in his feet also. With these conditions, how much water should my dad drink a day?

I think your doctor should tell you how much liquid he should drink to keep hydrated. I know it goes by the patients weight . My son is 54 he is 6 ft plus tall & weighs 64 kg , dr says he has to have 1800ml per day.Try to ask your doctor to be on the safe side . It also has to do with how much he urinates . Safer to ask dr how much should go in & how much should come out to avoid swelling up.

I am 77years old with an eGFR of 44, Stage 3B ckd. I experienced a water issue. I was drinking about 4 liters of water per day. I drank this much water thinking I was helping my kidneys to remove toxins from my body. I also had swelling in my feet, ankles and legs. My nephrologist wanted me reduce my intake of fluids to 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day. My swelling was dramatically reduced. The National Kidney has an iPhone app "H2Overload: Fluid Control for Heart-Kidney Health". I would suggest that you check with your nephrologist to determine your daily fluid intake. kidney.org/apps/patients/h2...

I have another medical condition that dictates how much water intake is. Have to keep things in balance. So best to ask your Doctor.

Ask both your PCP and your nephrologist to help you determine how much fluid you should intake each day for your medical condition.

Hi Goomba98I have stage 4 CKD and I was told to drink at least 3-4 liter’s per day it helps to keep the kidneys flushed out. It can have juice added if you wish. ( sorry about the spelling mistake ) 😬

His neufrologist is the only one to truly advice but to give you a ballpark idea of what everyone else is and what my mother is you’d see the range. My mom was recommended 50-60 ounces of water which he said she could take a 2 liter bottle of water making it 7 ounces more then the amount he said to begin with. So I highly suggest you consult with his neufrologist to get the accurate amount. My mom is 121.4 pounds and is about 5 feet 2 inches. She’s 72 years old and is stage 5 CKD with a filtration (GFR) of 11%. Her doctor said he wants to work with her to avoid dialysis. Fingers crossed God help her pull though this. Good luck and God help your dad too.

General rule of thumb is half your weight in ounces of water to avoid dehydration. Overloading the kidneys is just as bad as dehydrating them.

It depends. My nephrologist said I need to urinate about 2 littres a day.. you could say drink 2 litres,, but some people retain liquids. So check wirh your doctor. Each case is different.
