My Dad who is 75 has just entered stage 5 ckd and over the last few months his eyesight has deteriorated rapidly. It started with him struggling with small print followed by seeing all vertical lines as wavy. This latter issue wont get better but with new glasses he was able to read and drive. However, just a few weeks later he is struggling with reading close and distance and today said that when outdoors everything seems darker. Has anyone else had this happen ? I am worried he will lose his sight since it's only been a few weeks since he got his new prescription glasses. I have requested another home visit with optician but this isn't for another 2 weeks.
Thanks in advance for replies.

I am a kidney patient and have heard that deterioration in eyesight can be connected to ckd. If this happened to me I would contact the kidney team by phone and discuss it today. They are there to help with any problems connected with kidney desease and I'm sure they would be able to advise you.
Hi, suppose your father has dyabetes ? One complication is rethinopathy (which normally goes in parallel with nephropathy). Rethinopathy can be treated with laser. But you need to find a good oculist, well equipedd and well trained on this treatment. Dont waste further time. Rgs
This has to be scary for both of you. I would think that the quickness of the symptoms and how fast they are progressing would make this an emergency. Any way you can get the home optician to come earlier? Although this sounds like something for an ophthalmologist. Can you see about taking him to see one? I hope that you find answers for him.
Does your father have diabetes? Has he been checked for it? My eyesight getting worse is the way I found out I had diabetes. I can tell when my blood sugars are high or low.. vision gets blurry.
I can understand your worries. I would ask the optician or your primary for a referral to an Ophthalmologist with an interest in aging issues. As we age, most everything undergoes changes - sometimes it may be inherent to the eyes, other times it may an underlying condition such as kidney disease, diabetes, eye-brain condition, etc. It would be nice not to drag things out and to see a specialist knowledgeable with the symptoms your dad is displaying and can put a diagnosis and treatment plan in place sooner than later. Bless you for caring about your dad. Sending hugs to both of you.
