Rise in creatinine levels.

Hi,

My creatinine level is rising, I've done my transplant surgery 2 months ago. The lowest it has gone after the surgery was 128. Then it went up and down. But now it has risen to 188 over the last 3 weeks. Im getting scared that there is something wrong with my new kidney.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Thanks in advance

It’s normal for levels to go up and down after transplant. Keep monitoring it, get bloods done once a week, then check the levels, when you go to clinic talk to the doctor or transplant nurse about it, but if they suspect your having an acute rejection I’m sure they’ll contact you ASAP, if your worried then contact your transplant team.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. I will see the doctor next week and will tell him about it. And i will also keep monitoring my blood levels. And also trying to have a healthy diet even though it's very hard

When my creatinine went up the doctor said it’s because my tacrolimus dose is too high, I started taking a lower dose and my creatinine came down, for acute rejection they normally give you prednisone, how often do you go to clinic, after 2 months you should have clinics every 2 weeks. If there’s an issue the doctor or transplant nurse will ring me once they get the blood results and find a solution.

My tacrolimus level is 12.4, it has come down from the last blood test which was 14.5. the doctor gave me a call and told me to reduce the tablets to 3mg morning and night. Im still waiting for his call for the last blood test. I stil see the doctor ones a week. The thing that worries me is, after 5 weeks post transplant i started jogging and sometimes sprinting. And when i took my bloods my creatinine jumped from 136 to 166 in 1 week. And it kept going up. Now its 188. I told the doctor about it, but he said exercise is good for me, that has nothing to do with my creatinine going up.

You need to be expressing your concern to your transplant team. Many of us in the first few months following our transplant, our creatinine jumped all around. I even had 2-3 biopsies to make sure I was not rejecting the first year....I wasn't. Doctors did adjust my cellcept since my dose was too high and causing my fluctuating creatinine.Just like before transplant your creatinine can rise with over exercise and if you are dehydrated.

You should see what your team says. Have they been checking the blood level of your immunosuppressants? It takes time to get you on the right dose for you - high enough dose to prevent rejection but not too high so doesn't cause side effects and your creatinine to rise.

Best of luck.
