Can we switch to Hospice Care after dialysis has been started?

Hi,

My father is 81 years old and had a renal failure. We started dialysis but his health has become quite fragile. From the last 10-12 dialysis, we have to rush to the hospital due to infection or chills, high fever, shortness of breath, etc, admit him for 1 or 2 night and somehow bring him back after treating infection and oxygen supply. I feel his body is not ready for dialysis given he is extremely weak. Can I switch to Hospice care at this stage? I want his last days to be as painless as we can. thanks

Yes, dialysis can be stopped, but it's a discussion you and your father should have with his doctors. There's something called "palliative care" which may be an option for you.

Hello KCRG,

As Steve mentioned, choosing to stop dialysis is an option and should be discussed with your fathers care team. Here are some resources that you might find useful:

kidney.org/atoz/content/pal...

For more information you can also call the NKF Cares, patient information line at 1.855.NKF.CARES (1.855.653.2273)

Yes hospice care can still be requested even now. Palliative care can also be provided which can include things like in home physical or occupational therapy, housekeeping services, pain management, oxygen etc., while continuing dialysis. Age and long-term dialysis can take its toll. Be sure to discuss these options with your Father and his dialysis health care team before final decision. Remember even if hospice is chosen you can change that choice at any time. Best Wishes
