Blood and protein in urine

I have stage 3B ckd. I have had blood and protein in my urine, even though it is slight I am still worried. My nephrologist told me he's keeping an eye on it. Does everyone that has ckd have this? I am consuming very little protein in general this doesn't seem to matter. I guess I'm not understanding.....is this just part of the disease?

HI,

Protein leakage is common in CKD. Changing your diet may help or it may not with the leakage. But lower protein consumption in general is better for CKD.

Hematuria (blood) is not common. Depending on how much blood can be an indication of many things. It is a good thing your Doc is keeping an eye on it.

Things to look at yourself: Are you taking blood thinners? Do you take aspirin? Do you drink chamomile tea? Do you have any infections? Have you passed any stones or think you may have some? Has your doctor done an ultrasound?

Way back, I was passing so much blood in my urine it looked like cranberry juice. My doctor said it was from being on a blood thinner. It was not. I did not have it before and have never had it since and I am still on the blood thinner. It was from my kidneys crashing from medications. Don't let it go on without getting some answers.

Bassetmommer, what was the reference about chamomile tea? Does it cause blood in the urine?

HI DarlaPupMom

Chamomile tea can thin your blood much in the same way that coumadin and aspirin all do. But I think you would need to drink quite a lot of it. But if you are on a blood thinner, they recommend you do not drink it.

Like I said, I have been on prescribed blood thinners for years and I do not have blood in my urine from it. The blood I had was a situation with a combination of drugs that damaged my kidneys.

Thank you Bassetmommer. I’m not on blood thinners but good to know about chamomile tea. I rarely drink it so I’m good. 👍😊. Thanks again

From what I see on the urinalysis printouts they don’t have unit measurements for these so it is not a precise science. I see very general descriptions so I guess they are more general indicators of kidney functioning but I need to research this further to see what causes these to appear in urine.

Definitely consult back with your physician. Blood in urine even trace can be concerning. Be certain to detail your concerns and ask questions to get the answers you need. Take notes. Make sure to use phrases like "what does that mean" or " can you explain further" if anything doesn't make sense. Don't panic.

This was always part of my journey as I had PKD and often had infections, cysts, cyst ruptures, stones and more. I wasn't on blood thinners so that was never a cause. Blood in urine was usually precluded to a stone or infection which always brought on pain. Many times my urine would look like black coffee or straight red grape juice. I had several nurses or techs think I was pulling a prank first glance.

Hang in there.

Blessings

Trace is rarely visible to the eye. Even with test strips, dip sticks it can read 3 or 4+ blood and not be visible. If it's visible then it's more than trace. In my experience. Blessings

Sorry I'm confused you said just a trace bot visible to the eye. Wasn't sure if you meant NOT or BUT. Then you said not. I get it now. Thanks

I would suggest that you take someone with you when you go to the doctor. Both of you need to familiarize yourselves with your condition and prepare a set of questions. Let the other person take notes and help you ask further questions based on doc's answers.

If you exercise or put pressure in certain areas it may lead to small amount of blood in the urine. I have stage 3a ckd and at times my tests have small amount of blood in the urine from the pressure from sitting on my bike seat while cycling.

I am stage 4 ADPKD. My nephrologist and urologist could not figure why I had bloody urine. My pH was too acidic so I asked my PCP if I could try to fix it with sodium bicarbonate tablets. He said it wouldn't hurt so it took 3 days to clear up my urine. I keep a neutral or a bit alkali and check it twice a day. It seems that I had been irritating my kidneys with too much uric acid foods
