Bone Marrow , Liver

My Red blood cells , Hemoglobin , Hematocrit levels were excellent and recently fell just below the accepted level. My late wife – cancer - ate liver and bone marrow to improve her blood count. I was wondering if liver and bone marrow are good for our kidney problems also in the light of the article below , which says that kidney disease impacts on the bone marrow – thanks

Good question; I honestly don’t know. I’ll be interested to see what others have to say.

And, so sorry to hear about your wife.

Hi Allank,

I would rather chop my hand off than eat liver.... but that is my preference and childhood phobia. The nutritional values are all good, not high in anything like potassium or protein. But I look at this way: the liver, like the kidney, is a filter. Why would you want to eat something like a strainer for by products? But again, I think it is disgusting in general.

I use bones from my roasted chickens and turkeys to make my own low sodium and fat broth and soup bases. I actually just put the Christmas turkey carcass in the freezer for me to use next month when I have more time to stew it. I guess you can eat marrow directly, but again, this is in the same category for me as liver.

thanks especially for the link, liver is high in cholestorol ,so that is not a plus. I have reeady to eat liver in the freezer , I am still not in the stage when I easily throw away food , but maybe I let the RD decide in about 10 days time

I wouldn't eat it. I eat 2 strawberry Fig Newtons but Walmart brand every day to help keep my iron levels up. 2 cookies has 30% of your Iron needs.

I might try the 1 or 2 Fig Newtons. Maybe put in plain oatmeal or salad

I had to check what a fig newton is - I don't live in the USA - Israel . So eating figs is good for us - bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide...
