Can someone clarify how GFR and the stages of kidney failure are related? I thought I understood but then I read posts like “GFR of 10, stage 4” and then “GFR 14 stage 5”.

Below shows the five stages of CKD and GFR for each stage:
Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min)
Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min)
Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min)
Stage 3B Moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min)
Stage 4 Severe CKD (GFR = 15-29 mL/min)

HI CA,
Not sure what you mean by people not following these guides? Can you explain? There are many factors, not just GFR to define how kidney disease presents and how people deal with it. GFR indicates filter ability of the kidney. That's all. But there is much more to kidney disease. GFR is just a ratio and one indicator of function. And it fluctuates.
Hi the correct name is eGFR, the e stands for estimated as this is the best estimate at the time of the blood test and will vary a little. The other posts give an accurate description of the stages of CKD
Best wishes Philip
