Hi everyone! I have a question! My husbands gfr in March was 29, stage 4! We had new blood work do e and it says his gfr was 52! It has steadily declined since 2013 and now all of a sudden it goes up 21 points! Is this even possible? Should we be excited? Is it a fluke! His creatinine was 1.47 and he is +1 protein! Does any of this make sense? We see kidney doctor Thursday but just wondering if we can be excited about this or not! He is diabetic and has HTN

Increase in Gfr
Hi kaeyreed,
Yes be happy, but know that it will fluctuate. This was a good flux. Did he change up his diet, get his sugar stabilized, or some other improvement? Then this is the result. My hubby increased his GFR significantly just by simply drinking more water every day. Keep up the good work and let us know what he did to get there. And don't be too upset if it goes back down at some point. It may, or.....maybe not
Thank you Bassetmommer!! He drastically changed his diet! And that’s what scares me about this! He basically eats tuna, a few pork rynes and cauliflower with the occasional ice pop! He’s lost 26 pounds! And he’s drinking water with the sugar free flavor packets! BP is still averaging about 136/80 and blood sugar is usually around 200 or higher! Im not so sure that his gfr has come up or he just had his blood test at the right time! Phosphorus and potassium are both low now! (I did get couple more results after my original post). BUN went down but if he goes on a well balanced diet I’m afraid everything will come back up! I figured it might be too soon to get excited!
Wow, that is all he is eating? No wonder he lost 26 pounds. He should see a renal dietician who also will create a diet for his diabetes. If he sticks to eating what is on the diet, he will do fine. There will be fluctuations as that is normal. But he needs to include more things than what you listed. This is a lifestyle change and needs to be maintained. He will also feel better with proper nutrition. His sugar is still very high. The pork rynes are just not good for anyone.......
It could not hurt for you to read what is and what is not included in a standard kidney diet. Simple changes now can extend his kidney health in the future.
hi, this post is really heartening. If diet can actually cure this, why not keep to the diet Long term. My hubby has had this issue, just reading up on diet solutions, any more pointers? Thanks much
We went to the kidney specialist and she was shocked! All numbers have improved! He still has some issues but now his potassium and phosphorus are low! He does have protein in his urine and blood sugar is high so for now we are concentrating on that! But because of the improvement he has been placed in stage 3 CKD! Everything will be repeated in three months to make sure it wasn’t some kind of fluke! But doctor was excited! She said I never get to give people good news! So for now we will continue doing what we’re doing and pray it stays where it is!
