Question about a stone

This is really a question for a friend. She has only one kidney. She has a 12 mm and a 5mm stone in the lower lobe. Her GFR runs between 36-39. She is on Ramipril and then they put her on potassium citrate...which of course over loaded her system and she was hospitalized. She is off the potassium citrate, still on ramipril. She was told by her doctor, who she has little faith in that they are just going to leave the stones alone.

I know you are not doctors, but thoughts on this??? They think it is oxalate stones. She does feel her doctor is doing the best for her and it seems there are not a lot of options for her.

Oxilate stones are the most common type. However, 12 mm is a really large stone. The article attached is from the NKF library and your friend can use it to compare with what the doctors eventually recommend and ask questions before discharge. The article does talk about a meal plan to keep the stones from forming but other than various options for removal it will be up to the physicians and your friend to decide what to do about the ones there now. Wish your friend luck with this.

Thanks for the information. I am worried because I think she is getting the wrong advice.

Here's the NKF data on lithotripsy: kidney.org/atoz/content/kid...

It may be a treatment option for her.

Thank you for the information. Her doctor feels that shock waves is too risky.
