I am not an expert on renal diseases; so don't count on me.

As far as I know, the goal in stage 3A is improvement; while stage 3B is preserving remaining functions. In stage 3A, your kidneys can still do a decent job without much outlying symptoms, while in stage 3B, symptoms begin to appear due to remaining nephrons unable to maintain fully needed functions.

Good explanation. I was diagnosed at 3b. Other factors taken into consideration.
