Question: Who here would be willing to be a guinea pig and take a chance on this artificial kidney?
This is what the project team posted on their Facebook page. Looks positive to me🙏:
Dear TKP Community,
We wanted to provide a status update on clinical trials since we have received feedback from the research ethics boards at UCSF and Vanderbilt University.
We have been requested to provide more material safety evidence before proceeding with our first patients. To do this, we will conduct additional benchtop and preclinical experiments. The bioartificial kidney will be the first-ever blood-contacting device with silicon membranes, and there is no data from other similar devices. Once we have more safety data, it will be reviewed by the FDA and resubmitted to the research ethics boards for their approval.
While the request for additional evidence was not anticipated, it is a measure of the revolutionary nature of our project that there is no precedent for safety reviews of similar technology and materials. In that light, it is understandable that the research ethics boards are requesting additional data to document the safety of the bioartificial kidney.
Please know that we are committed to advancing the development of the bioartificial kidney to patients as quickly as possible – without compromising safety. It is difficult to estimate exactly when the clinical trial will begin, but we are hopeful that we will have approval for the first human trial in 2018 or early 2019.
You have been part of our journey, and you know how far we have already come! We will keep you updated as we progress and thank you for your continued patience and support.
