How much dialysis helps kidney function

FYI:. I asked my nephrologist at our last appointment how much PD (peritoneal dialysis) is helping my kidney function? He said PD is giving my kidneys about 20% function, plus whatever function (GFR) my kidneys retained on their own. My GFR is around 10 (as I have said before, the doctor says this number can fluctuate a few points between blood tests), so I have 30% function. However, dialysis (hemo or PD) cannot replace the hormones the kidneys produce for proper PTH levels and other important functions (including production of red blood cells, regulating calcium in bones, etc.). It is not really good news, but I am grateful someone along the way addressed a way to dialysize the kidneys. People used to die of this disease before dialysis was invented!
