I have nephrotic syndrome which includes what feels to me to be a bad case of œdema. My weight has gone up by about 3 stone in the last two months, which means there's more than 15 litres of excess water inside me, which is uncomfortable and rather painful, especially in my legs. My consultant has increased my dose of Furosemide by stages up to 6 x 40mg tablets a day, but with no result. I'm peeing no more than normal. I understand you can have Furosemide intravenously. Has anyone on the forum had this, and if so could you tell me what it's like to have it?
kind regards
Ian

Furosemide is a loop diuretic. There are others that will work better if you have difficulty with Lasix. I'd suggest you ask your doctor which would be better for you but with CKD you want to avoid Sodium Edecrin, for obvious reasons. Another big issue for you will be the dosage. Did your physician tell you that you were carrying that much water weight? Best of luck with the meds.
I feel for you I was in that position last year and was admitted to hospital as the fluid was also in my lungs and surrounding my heart. I had ecg chest xray and heart scan. I don't want to worry you but they detected that the fluid was starting to damage my heart function and causing leaky heart valves. I was given iv furosemide for the first 5 days. It took that long to see some progress the consultant wanted me to lose 1 kilo a day. I was also having to measure what a drank and what I peed out. I was out on restricted fluids of 1000mls.
I pleased to say I got it under control and once I was discharged I moved on to oral furosemide as allergic to lactose. My heart scan was repeated and better now rhe fluid has gone.
I'm just getting over another stone of fluid build up so now on 750mls restriction.
Are you on any restrictions with fluid? If you are don't forget jeĺly, yogurt, gravy, all count and even rice and pasta absorbing the water.
Thanks both for your helpful replies. Reading your experience has given me an idea of what to expect, Charlene. I'm on 1000ml of fluid a day max, but I hadn't thought about yoghourt etc. I'm seeing the consultant tomorrow to get the results of a kidney biopsy, and I hope we'll then get treatment sorted out.
