I've never been one for weighing myself, but after getting bigger since a broken foot in early May, I've discovered I'm 3.5 stone overweight. I'm so ashamed to have let myself get this heavy but I'm determined to change it. I'm planning to stick to 1400 calories a day but having never counted calories in my life I was wondering if anyone has any tips. Thank you!!

Definitely don't be ashamed of yourself. Look towards living more healthily, sure, but you are the same wonderful person regardless of anything else.
As you follow the links provided by YellowRose, you'll see a link to the NHS BMI calculator. The 1400 cals you mention is possibly the generic number provided for women in general. Do take the time to run the calculator which will provide you with a calorie range tailored specifically for you.
Good luck!
