Sore hips

Hi everyone, I have been off and on this site for a couple of years reading your interesting stories and hints. I'm 69, a little overweight but would like to lose about a stone. I'm a keen gardener and hiker, take fairly regular exercise and have recently started getting hip pain. was wondering whether anyone has had this problem and resolved it by losing weight? I'm 5'2 and weigh 9st13ib and have been a yoyo dieter for years.

Thanks for any feedback

Lizzy

Hello and welcome Elizahanna 😊

Judging by your height and weight, your BMI is a little high but I wouldn't think high enough to cause the hip pain you describe, especially as you are so fit and active.

I would definitely go to your GP and ask for an X-ray and possible a referral to an orthopaedic specialist 😕

As another lady of over 60, I have had bouts of hip and or knee pain - not certain whether it is just wear and tear, or arthritis, but found it comes and goes - and is definitely better when my weight is lower. I have found that stretching exercises before activity are very helpful.

Also, do you walk with two walking poles when you go hiking, (or in my case, one pole and one dog) as this helps the arms take more strain and relieves the effort for the legs.

Some people find cod liver oil and glucosamine helps their joints, but I find if you have a balanced, wide ranging diet, supplements don't necessarily make a lot of difference.

Lastly, a memory foam mattress makes sleeping with sore hips much more comfortable and you feel better much more quickly if you get a good night's sleep.

That's really helpful thankyou. I do use one stick when hiking and couldn't manage without it. I'll do more stretching and have also found some good exercises to do. Getting older I guess!
