You know you've lost weight when...

Today I met a former colleague I'd not seen for about 5 or 6 years, I could tell he wasn't sure if he recognised me at first, but then he said "didn't you used to be fat?"

Thought that was a bit harsh at first (I know I was overweight, but was I actually fat?) but now I'm really chuffed about it :)

Anyone had anything similar?

I had a really effusive positive response only a couple of days ago whilst walking down the lane, however, most responses show concern that I'm getting or going to get too skinny (see a previous post (which was a bit tongue in cheek)). I've almost stopped getting annoyed with them and my BMI is still 'overweight'.

Then last week, a friend told me that a friend of a friend of her's husband had died because he gave up booze. I gave up alcohol almost 5 weeks ago and she sat me down and was so concerned that I was going to die :O . Sheeeesh!!!! I'm beginning to think that the only really positive people are on here.

This isn't a moan btw. These people just aren't used to the new me yet, the weight has dropped off much more quickly then I ever imagined so it may be a shock to them but I'm more than happy.

I just read your interesting post, I guess seeing someone make positive changes can remind people what they should be doing themselves and they get threatened by that.

Died because he gave up the booze - It's bizarre the rationalisations people come up with :)

That must have been a weird conversation. It's funny the things people believe.

Humans seem to pigeonhole people - once they slot you into the fat (or any other category), that where you'll always be. Perhaps some folk find it difficult to come to terms with change, or are envious of success. Good on you for doing so well and not letting the doubters derail you.

I had someone announce, " Oh look you're getting cheek bones!"

"Yes", I politely replied. Thinking 'Moron, they have always been there - or my face would have caved in.'

Just because she's been too ignorant to realise there's much more under people's skin than fat! We have bones too! And feelings! And many other things too!

I'm sure she meant well, but it can be belittling in front of a dozen or so people. Her announcement was insensitive to say the least.

It's funny you mentioned bones Weight-be-gone I am noticing my body having bones I knew were there. It hadn't felt since I was a teenager. I put them out to my husband but I wouldn't really want someone else to point them out in a crowded room. I think people aren't sure what to say - my plumber came in and blurted straight out that 'blimey you've lost a lot of weight' whereas other people say you look well. It's a tricky area as people don't want to offend. Personally I am fine people notice because they would have been noticing when I was fat too!

I was working at an office where on the floor above was the training for the council, I saw one of my old workmates from my precious department. Hadn't seen her for 1 & 1/2 years and she walked straight past me!! I called her name and she did a double take.. saying she didn't recognise me.. I laughed and said my voice hasn't changed though or my laughter!! It was quite funny and nice to catch up.
