I had my first day back at the gym today for aggggges!! I can't even remember the last time I went. I was dreading it to be honest, the thought of putting in all the effort so daunting and I didn't know where to start. But I had arranged a free personal training session and it turned out to be the best thing. My personal trainer was absolutely lovely. He helped me to forget that anyone else was in the gym and showed me exercises I would need to try and achieve weight loss. He was really empathetic with my situation and didn't make me feel like I was a criminal for putting on weight and being unfit. I'm sure not all personal trainers are the same but i wanted to share my story as it might be worth a go if you are considering it. I have arranged to see him again in six weeks time for a programme refresh and fitness test (£35). I'm feeling determined to hit that target and show him my progress (even with Christmas approaching).

This is a lovely positive post Fran, well done you!

I have to admit to finding the thought of gyms and personal trainers, terrifying! It's good to know that it's not all "Biggest Loser" style!

I shall look forward to hearing how you progress and how you impress your trainer, at your 6 week refresh and fitness test :)

Thank you 😃

Really refreshing to read

My 23 year old son has been in retail since leaving school. This September tho he started a course on personal training after enjoying working out at the gym.

Hes a sensible lad and I'd like to think if he gets his qualifications will be an asset to the health of a lot of people like you, me and others like us.

I shared what you wrote and he said it was good to hear your side and his word's were " I'd never be judgemental with anyone and hope I can build a solid foundation with clients "

That's so lovely to hear Kath50. I hope your son enjoys the course and helps lots of people in the same way.

It's hard to know what a trainer is going to be like without recommendation but there are trainers who really care and want to help. I was really nervous about being in the gym but now I'm more confident about what I'm doing because I've been shown properly and can see the benefit. Strength training really helps you see the changes in your body more quickly when changing your eating habits and that motivates you more. Having someone watch out for you is a real incentive. Good luck with the next 6 weeks and keep us posted! 😀

Thank you for this fabfran85 - it's very encouraging as I have been offered the opportunity to go with a friend to share a session with her PT by way of introduction to see if it would suit me too. She is an ex-fitness instructor herself, so really pretty fit already, whereas I am overweight and suffering from arthritic pain, which doesn't help anything. So I was a bit nervous about whether the PT would work out for me, but your post has encouraged me to give it a go. Like you, I wasn't thinking of going weekly, but getting a steer on doing appropriate exercises correctly and then going back intermittently for a 'check-up'.

Thanks again for the post 😀
