Making life to hard?

Hi, I'm a newbie. I joined on Sunday and have been busy looking around. There are some really inspirational posts on here. So I'm in my forties, over weight and a smoker 😕 I also have a few health issues which funnily enough aren't related to being an over weight smoker. Here's the thing, I want to lose weight and give up smoking but will I make it difficult on myself trying to do both at the same time? Have any of you done so and succeeded? or should I concentrate on one thing at a time and if so which one do I start with 😬😬😬😬 would be extremely grateful for any feedback, TIA x

Hi Rosieb10,

Welcome to the forum, and I hope you'll enjoy being part of this community. I suspect you may have already seen the Welcome Newbie post that Moreless put together, but incase you haven't already seen it, I'll give you think link here:

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Please do join in anything you fancy - there are some great Challenges going on, and the Monday group weigh-in is really well attended and supportive, if you like the idea of a 'virtual group weigh-in'. :-)

I've never smoked myself, so I can't really give any useful comments on your question about which to tackle first - but hopefully somebody who has experienced the process of quitting smoking and has been on a weight loss journey may be able to give you the benefit of their experience.

I'd also like to mention that on Healthunlocked there is a community called Quit Support, which is for people who are trying to give up smoking, and it might also be worth asking that question there, if you wanted to find out their experiences. The link for that community is here:

healthunlocked.com/quitsupport

Maybe join in both communities, which might be really complementary, if you do decide to try to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time. If you do decide to focus first on the smoking, then I hope you'll come back when you're ready to tackle the weight.

Wishing you success in whatever you decide.

Lowcal :-)

Hi and welcome Rosie :)

Six months ago, I was morbidly obese and a smoker. To date, I have lost 4.5st and haven't had one single puff since I joined this community :)

I have in the past given up smoking and piled on the pounds, or concentrated on losing weight and chain smoked. Neither of those was a happy situation.

This time, I made the decision to change my whole way of thinking and follow a completely healthy lifestyle. I quit the cigs, changed what I ate and started exercising. I feel like a million dollars! :)

Please feel free to follow my story, because if I can inspire/motivate just one person, then I shall be very happy :) Could I also point out that there's a very supportive quit smoking forum too, which I'm sure could help you too

I've been lucky, because I've found the whole experience enjoyable and thank my lucky stars I found this site. I sincerely hope that it'll be the same for you :)
