Congratulations!!

If you're very sure about being pregnant and have taken a home test, he may just take your word for it and refer you to a midwife. Only likely test may be urine sample to verify pregnancy, but this isn't always done. If he's good, he'll check that you're taking folic acid or recommend that you start taking it immediately. Depending on your NHS Trust, you may see a midwife earlier (around 8 weeks), in other Trusts your first appointment will be at the same time as your first scan (usually around 12 weeks)

It should all be very straightforward (possibly even slightly underwhelming!), so relax and enjoy.

I agree with above statement. Your doctor will refer you to hospital for you to meet your midwife. You will also have blood samples taken too make sure everything is good. You will find out if your blood group is positive or negative. If your blood group is negative you will have to have an anti body injection around 28 weeks. The midwife will explain every thing that will happen at apointments over your pregnancy. Every thing in pregnancy is scary and delightful. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi 1875

Congratulations!!

I went to my doctor to tell them I'm pregnant a couple of weeks ago. I was expecting them to do tests and tell me what I should/shouldn't be eating, what exercise I could do etc. In reality they just took my word for it and referred me to my local hospital (who I haven't heard from yet).

I was a bit disappointed at the time, but in retrospect I hadn't prepared any questions to ask! I did loads of research myself online and I feel like I know enough for now to look after myself until my appointment comes through.

So my advice would be do some research before you go so you can prepare any questions you want to ask.

Good luck :o)
