Glucose tolerance Test

Teddy02 profile image

Hi everyone, I have a glucose tolerance test this month. The midwife informed me that I have to put 17 glucose tablet's in a cup and drink. Was just a bit worried if it would be too much of sugar and would it harm the baby. Would be comforting to know about your experiences.

Thank you all

Hi there,

Glucose tests will not harm the baby. This is routine for every pregnancy to check for gestational diabetes. Having uncontrolled diabetes is far far bigger risk than any potential concern from a one time test.

You'd be surprised to know we consume excess sugar daily in our diet without even noticing.

Thank you very much

I do not know how much sugar was in mine as was given a ready prepared one when had this before but I'm sure it was LOADS as it was disgustingly sweet. It's a standard procedure with a give load of glucose. If you're worried you misheard just give them a call to confirm to amount.

However had negative test both times a I had it. Definitely worth having it checked.

Thank you

I was given a drink and it was horribly sweet! But they wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t safe. My size 8 sister who is far healthier than me had a positive test so it’s definitely worth doing. Agree that if you think you have the wrong quantities double check first.

Thank you very much

I have to do with in a couple of weeks, because I’m ‘an older mother’ the cheek of it 😆

I’m more concerned about the double blood tests as they always struggle finding veins in my arms anyway 🥴

All the best to you too

Hi, I did the test just a few weeks ago and it is indeed 17 tablets in one glass of water. I was worried I’d be climbing the walls with the sugar high afterwards but it was fine. Agree with the others that it’s a really important test and I don’t think it would be in place if it harmed the baby at all. Good luck with it xx

Thank you

Hi, I had three of this tests, two full ones and one mini (the one I had to take the water with 17 glucose tablets one hour before the test) and it was all fine, they were concern because of my baby’s weight/size but it was all fine and my little one is now a month old is thriving and in good health.

Thank you very much

It’s a routine check and they wouldn’t do it, if it would harm baby. I was given a sugary drink, didn’t have too what you are saying. Nothing to worry about, just make sure you have something to eat afterwards as you may feel sick and weak. x
