blood thinner injection

Wendywendywendywendy profile image

hi all,

I got RA for 3 and half years and believe the condition is under control.

I have been trying to have a baby for serval months. But I haven’t got pregnant yet.

And I was told by my rheumatologist recently that my one blood index is high which lead to high risk of getting blood clots during pregnancy. So I need to have blood thinner injection once I am pregnant everyday until six weeks after the due day.

Have this also happen to you? I have to say that having injection everyday sounds a lot. Have my biological pen twice a week is ok but on top of that, more injections, I don’t know whether I want to do it or not.

Would be really nice to hear if anyone experienced it.

Wendy

Good morning Wendy,

I had to have blood thinning injections throughout my last 2 pregnancies due to a few health conditions I have.

The needles are so tiny and thin it's just like a tiny scratch. The only side effect I suffered was bruising.

If I didn't have the injections everyday my pregnancies wouldn't have been successful.

It was worth the slight discomfort for those few months when I held my baby's for the first time.

Thank you so much for your sharing. It is nice to know that the injections are not too painful. I know it sounds silly but because of RA, I suffered a lot of pain. The last thing I want is to have more pain. Thank you a lot.

I have them for my pregnancies. I find them very painful on my stomach but not so bad if someone else does them on the back of my arm. I'm quite thin and find finding good fatty areas hard, particularly as my bump increases and tummy becomes tight. I also find the needles quite blunt compared to other injections I've had to have. But needs must. I want a healthy baby so I have my injections and aspirin everyday

Thank you for the sharing. I will definitely try the back arm when I need to.

Hi yes I had to take blood thinning injections before I was pregnant then until 6 weeks after. I found them painful and bruised until someone told me to apply an ice cube to the injection site for a few minutes before injecting and then after to firmly press a cotton wool ball to the spot you have injected for 2 minutes. That stopped it being painful and bruising. I will admit that as my bump got bigger I worried about hitting the baby with needle, midwife reasured me that wasn't possible but I would still feel where baby was laying and inject in the other side of my stomach.

Thank you so much for the sharing. I will remember to use ice cube on the injection site beforehand and cotton wool ball afterwards. Judging by how much fat is on my belly, I am not so concern about the needle will hit the baby.

I had to inject from week 28 I think, due to BMI and age. I also had gestational diabetes and was doing finger prick blood tests and having insulin injection several times a day. I was like a pin cushion. It very quickly just became normal to do it and part of my daily routine. The o injections were fairly painless. My little one is 2 now and it all feels like a distant memory. It might feel quite big and overwhelming at first but if you talk to your doctor or nurse hopefully they can put your mind at ease a bit xx

Thank you a lot. It was a big deal when I first heard it from the doctor. Now after few days research and receiving lots of advice from the group, I am less anxious. Hope all this will become a distant memory soon. Thank you.

Hi new here but also having these injections daily plus aspirin. I also have progesterone injections but these will stop hopefully soon at 12 weeks. Similar to all the other ladies, the blood thinner injections are slightly painful at the site of injection but the main pain is the bruising for me… My tummy starts to look blue/purple… I am not sure I could have a nice pregnancy photoshoot even if I wanted ha!

But indeed this is the only way my pregnancy can carry on I am told so a little price to pay if this works, especially after 3 miscarriages. I am only 9 weeks now but trying to take it one day at a time.

I will definitely try the ice cube method as kind of ran out of blue spots to inject these days.

Good luck everyone!

Thank you for the sharing. Hope the ice cube will help with the bruise. Lots of good luck to you and the baby. I am sure the baby will be beautiful.

Hi hunny, I've been on 2 Tinzaparine injections a day since about two weeks into my pregnancy. The blood thinners are essential to help blood pressure and flow, it's become a daily part of life for me now. I also take Amgevita (biologic injections) every fortnight, I feel for you! It's not a nice thing to go through (I'm covered in bruises) but definitely worth it. It all depends on what's best for you and your baby.Good luck! X
