Severe back pain not a good enough reason

Hi all, I am currently 28+3 with baby number 2. I suffered with my back with first baby but no where near as much as I am this time round. The bottom of my back feels like it is pushing to one side (side varies) I can barely walk some days and have been stuck on the floor in more than one occasion. I have mentioned this to midwife who referred me to physiotherapist where I was given a support belt. This really hasn't helped much at all.

I had a midwife appoint ment last week where I asked if I could possibly be booked for csection due to the pain only getting worse and worse. The thought of going into labour with back worse than this is terrifying. She basically told me she would refer me to consultant but that it will more than likely be a no as not really a good enough reason?

is this right? She said my first labour was fine so no reason why they would agree to me having one.

My anxiety is going through the roof right about now as I wait for the appointment with consultant. Has anyone else had this problem?

Someone posted about wanting a csection last week, apparently you wanting one is a good enough reason to get one if you’ve been told of the risks etc. They got theirs on this basis. I hope it’ll be the same for you if it’s what you really want. Only you know your own body. Hope it works out for you and the back pain doesn’t get too much worse x

Thank you this is what I was hoping. It isn't a decision that I've made blindly I've been reading all about it and know what to expect (bad and good) This is what I was trying to say to ME I know my body! Thank you xx

Hi there, it was me that posted about electing for a c section. Maternal request is enough of a reason. My consultant was fab and didn’t put up any barriers but if you have a consultant that is being difficult you have to tell them that they cannot refuse you. Refer them to the NICE guidelines.

1.2.9.5 For women requesting a CS, if after discussion and offer of support (including perinatal mental health support for women with anxiety about childbirth), a vaginal birth is still not an acceptable option, offer a planned CS. [new 2011]

1.2.9.6 An obstetrician unwilling to perform a CS should refer the woman to an obstetrician who will carry out the CS. [new 2011]

This is brilliant thank you so much I will make sure I have this in mind when my appointment comes through x

I'm having a planned c section due to medical reasons but in the NICE guideline booklet on c sections it states you can request one. It says after discussion & support with a Dr if you still feel you don't want a vaginal birth, you should be offered a c section.

You definitely know you own body. My consultant made me go to the birth options clinic & discuss everything before she agreed to support a c section even though she 100% said it was the safest option for me. Stick to your guns Hun. X

Find NazReed on here she’s offering pre-natal exercises based on Pilates safe during pregnancy which could really help with your back.

Hope the rest of your pregnancy is more comfortable and you don’t have to fight too hard for the right birth for you. X
