Hi everyone.

I am 44 and pregnant with 1st baby, am now 15 weeks and was prescribed 150mg daily of asprin as they say at my age I am high risk for pre-ecplampsia. I have a BMI of 23, never smoked, not drunk alcohol for over 6 months now. My main concern is any harm it may do to my baby. Has anyone else be prescribed this without any real reason other than age related? I have had my 12 weeks scan and all was well and baby was infact 4 days bigger than expected. This is an ivf pregnancy with my own egg and I have also had all screening back for NT, trisomies all clear. Any advice very welcome xx

Hi 😊 I'm 40 and a first time mum at 25 weeks. BMI of 24, no health issues either, don't smoke and rarely drink but I've also been classed as high risk just because I'm older. I'm on 75mg Aspirin a day and will have a consultant led birth. My doctor has said that the aspirin is such a low dose that it doesn't affect the baby. She also said I can take 8 paracetamol a day and it causes no issues for the baby, I needed these for a neck problem about 14 weeks in. Had my 20 weeks scan and baby's size was perfect so I've no concerns. The one good thing about being high risk is we get two extra growth scans at 28 and 34 weeks to check baby's growing OK. If you're still concerned, speak to your midwife or doctor xx

Thanks so much for your reply and congratulations! I think I am mainly concerned by the amount being 150mg and not 75mg as it seems excessive. I will call midwife tomorrow xxx

Preeclampsia is pretty indiscriminate with regards to how healthy you are and what your lifestyle is. I had it with my last pregnancy (DS is 5) and I'm now 37 and 32 weeks pregnant, high risk of preeclampsia. My consultant advised me to take 75mg asprin until I got a positive pregnancy result, then increase the dose to 150mg and start Daltparin injections - the increased dose of asprin is perfectly safe for baby and having experienced preeclampsia first hand, I'd advise you to take it. Recent studies have proven that the 150mg dose is more effective. Hope you have a good pregnancy x

Thanks for the advice, I am sorry to hear you had pre-eclampsia. I think I have been on google so much and seen that 150mg is considered to be quite a high dose. But it is reassuring to know that it has no effect on the baby as I had concerns that it would xxx

Congratulations, hoping you have a happy healthy pregnancy. I was 44 when I had my little boy, I had a history of miscarriage (13 in all). I was prescribed 75mg of aspirin to reduce the risk of placental blood clots. There is lots of evidence that aspirin does no harm during pregnancy and its been used for a very long time, so in my opinion was it was worth taking. I had a trouble free pregnancy although my blood pressure increased in the last week (suspected pre-eclampsia) and had a healthy little boy.

Thanks so much, and I am so sorry about your miscarriages. I think my main concern is the dose of 150mg as I read all the time that the dose should be 75mg?xxx

Aspirin definitely thins the blood not thickens it.

They've got me on 75mg since week 12 since there's a history of preeclampsia in my family. I'm 38.
