i am happy i was able to find and connect with this community of folks dealing with MD. I was diagnosed in 2018 snd started treatment in 2022. I have been ok but my biggest challenge still is energy levels.
does anyone here recommend or have experience with a diet for those of us with MS?

Eat what you want. I do recommend a balanced diet with limited chemical additives, but there's no miracle diet for MS. Some people have found that limiting carbs helps them, but for others that doesn't work. The general rule of thumb is to just keep yourself as healthy as possible in as many ways as you can.
Welcome to the forum, shamoneldy ! The are many diets out there that claim one benefit or another. However, I agree with NorasMom . Ask your medical professional what they would recommend and go from there. You can visit mymsaa.org for resources on managing your ‘ms’. I look forward to hearing more from you. Keep Smiling
thank you carolek572 my doc said pretty much cut out processed foods but its hard most of the time, i guess i can at least prep my foods on a day i have better energy levels to eat less takeout. thanks for resource call out.
It’s hard cutting out processed foods because better foods take more energy to make. At least that’s what I find. I need some super simple recipes I can make.
I don’t know if you are in an area where you can subscribe to a service that sends you all the ingredients that you need to make a homecooked meal, but that might be something that could work for you, shamoneldy ? Keep Smiling
Hello and welcome! Generally it's recommended to avoid sugar and highly processed food and eat more whole foods. Easier said than done for me, it seems like a process...
Delicious and energizing, right? At least until the sugar crash. I will be trying along with you! At least there's not a lot of pressure to give up caffeine though, as long as it doesn't bother you -enjoy!
Hi shamoneldy, and welcome! I don't have any great advice on diets, except to try to eat healthy, but everything in moderation seems to do the trick for me. I would add, since you say you struggle with energy levels, that even though it may be difficult, try your best to get up and move. A little exercise every day is very important. Keep those muscles moving. 🙂
I really get that. It's hard for me, too. But it's great for MS, if you can do enough it can help your body repair myelin damage to an extent. You know yourself best, but I was a little mad that nobody ever told me that. So now you know. 😅
I do a modified whals protocol. She wants you to get all nutrients from food. However I do some supplements. I found eating more meat & lots of greens veggies fruits & carbs to keep blood sugar levels equal. Energy levels better Have easy meals for days can't cook & leftovers my friend. No gluten cut down sugar for me mostly lactose free but some cheese beed for bones. Antiinflammatory foods etc ad infinitum
Nice i tried for a month and I did notice the energy boot but it was hard to keep doing it for long. i heard about int fasting maybe ill try that and just cut out processed foods as much as i can…
Hi and welcome! I followed a very strict anti inflammatory diet (Whal’s) for about 6 months after I was diagnosed. It’s hard and takes a lot of effort! I kind of wanted to reset my body and it definitely helped. I started following it loosely after 6 months because I still wanted to live life (eat out, enjoy sweets or bread, lol). Following a healthy diet has helped me so much, but there are so many out there! You’ll have to experiment with what works for you and stick with it 🩷
Basically, despite what is claimed by various self-appointed "MS diet" gurus running shiny pretty web-sites, there isn't any diet which is "best" for MS, but what is best is to cut our processed foods, sugar drinks, excessively fatty foods etc i.e. pretty much eat a Mediterranean diet. There are also sorts of claims of "evidence" made by the self-appointed gurus, but that evidence is cherry picked and any research which does not support their particular version of a diet is intentionally ignored.
Here's three excellent webinar resources about diet and MS.
You also need to be wary about some of what is promoted online - some elements of the "MS diet communities" tick a few too many boxes on cult checklists in relation to some of the strategies they use to "persuade" PwMS to stay people involved (e.g. emotional blackmail, victim blaming etc), while other include total BS to justify their "advice" - such as MS being caused by worms in the brain. You do not need to follow any "MS diet" to get rid of junk foods and eat more healthily with vegies and fruit and other fresh produce - there are plenty of legitimate resources around that are properly evidence based.
Hi! I have been looking for a diet but have found none. I have noticed certain foods that give me a reaction and I stay away from them. It’s a lot of trial & error. For myself, I am Italian, so I eat a lot of pasta dishes. I can not eat regular pasta. I have to eat wheat pasta. Yes it’s a different taste but eventually you get use to it lol. Also pizza dough. I have noticed I can not eat regular pizza anymore. I make my own dough with wheat flour and yes it is different but I’m happy to be eating pizza. lol I also have found a recipe for veggie burgers made with black beans. I think they are good. The recipe is from allrecipes.com called homemade black bean veggie burgers. (I can’t figure out how to put link here, sorry)
Welcome to the group shamoneldy , sorry for the reason. This is a wonderful group to ask questions, celebrate, and more. Look forward to getting to know you more.
