Learning to be a "Fall Risk!!"

I haven't been on here much because I've had some small falls and a couple of more serious falls. A knot on my fore head, 3 times I landed on my left Elbow. Both knees and wrists are just healing from a fall 3 weeks ago.. scabs on both arms from just losing my balance and the textured wall scratched my more older delicate skin.

I'm going to two different specialists tomorrow for "Memory & Aging. Then following that Appointment, I go to my neurologist office about being a fall risk.. Thank the Lord for my husband! Will let you all know how it goes. I miss you all! CalfeeChick!

So sorry to hear about your falls.

I have had a few too. Broken hip and a broken foot along with a few other things.

We have to be so careful. Are you using a walker? I hope you get some answers from your neuro. Be safe.

wow so sorry about that ...do you have a cane that you can use to help with the balance ...great idea to talk to the doctor...be more careful...love and happiness..

I have 2 canes and keep one near me at all times.

Clearly, with the number and severity of the falls you have described, it is waaaaay past time for something more effective than a cane - and thus way overdue for someone like your neuro to read you the riot act about doing something about it! As you get carted off in an ambulance with a serious break in one or more bones it will be a bit late to start thinking, "Hmmm, maybe I should have been a bit more proactive about using a walker or something so I don't keep falling over..."

Good thing you don't have roses! That would have been a sticky situation!

hubby said no garden this year. We've got to get a new fence and have 2 redwoods taken out. They were leaning toward the neighbors 2 story house last winter when the wind & rains were so ferocious. Going to be expensive year! We need to get new roof put on too. House was built in 1954. We inherited from his parents. They made some improvements, but now it's our turn! We'll survive or sell as is and move out!

I get the expense part! We had to remove 7 different trees last year! Luckily one fell over by itself and managed to miss everything. Two my husband could cut. We only had to hire out three of them.

We have to replace our fence too. We’ve been prepping to do the removal ourselves. (Saves about $2000). But we only have about a week and a half to be ready!

So good to hear from you, despite that your news wasn't the best. Good luck with your appointments tomorrow. Sending good thoughts your way. Keep us posted.

Terrible! I hope you find management strategies to reduce the risk. My Neuro hates my canned reply to the fall question…. β€˜I’m trying to fly but the ground keeps getting in my way’. Seriously, a new AFO and two hiking sticks (one in each hand) have drastically reduced my falls. I’ve also changed some of my traditional chores. Now I’m hiring local kids to change irrigation lines for me. Walking on stubble fields and in growing alfalfa is very hard with foot drop! I hope you can develop a strategy that works for you!

my fall risk has decreased significantly since starting aerobics. I wish I had realized how much exercise could help me twenty years ago.

I wish you luck and be careful!

I've started using a cane even in the house. Hubby built 2 8' foot gardens for me and we will have to dismantle them so we can get the sequoia taken out. We planted them 15 yrs ago and they were so little, now they are about 40' tall. I will miss them for sure. I was born and rasied in the Californioa mountains and seqouias were all around.

Your bubble suit is letting you down! We will have to reinforce it. Seriously, I hope you get some feedback on all of this and I will keep you in my prayers. I've missed you!

I have had quite a number of fall because of tripping on my own feet when exercising. I know how fast the ground comes up at you and how hard you can hit. I really hope you are feeling better all over soon!

CaffeeChick, I'm sorry to hear about you falls. I've fallen several times. Fortunately I did not get hurt and I hope the same for you. I finally went to PT for balance. It did not cure me but it helped. I use a cane whenever I feel especially unsteady. I also have a walker if I am going to be walking a long time. It was a hard decision to make but I needed to make it. I use scooters in Walmart and other big stores. I refuse to buy a scooter. That just seems like giving up. Good luck in your search.

Thank you! I wear thick socks and forget to wear shoes or slippers with thick soles so far I've fallen in the Kitchen and a few times in the bathroom. The bathroom was scary because I've fallen from the toilet to the tub and somehow my back can take it.

Oh dear, CalfeeChick ! Please do be more careful. Not sure how. I go to the hospital for tests and they always ask if I am a fall risk. I feel like I am not truthful when I say β€˜no’ because I have many close calls. Let us know how your appointment goes, and I am sending you lots of πŸ€—. Thank goodness for your awesome husband!
