Lost a few years this morning

So, Charlemagne's a mid-sized shepherd mutt. Poorly trained, boisterous, and the love of my life. Courtesy of unleashed neighbor dogs, Charlie doesn't like anyone or anything except the immediate family. Our morning routine is that we roll out of bed, put on his harness, and send him out the front door. While he does his business, I stagger around getting coffee and trying to wake up.

I waited this morning until the garbage truck had moved down the road, then I turned him loose on the cable that's attached to the porch. And then watched as he snapped the cable and ran for the pickup truck on the road. I'm screaming for him to come back, and fortunately he stopped at the edge of the yard and went no farther.

He starts to come when I call, but then he sees new fun. A neighbor is walking her tiny little teacup something-or-other and he goes racing up the road, still staying in the grass and off the road, to greet them. I'm in pajamas. I'm braless with unbrushed hair. I'm trying to run in slippers through the wet grass, calling his name, gasping for air, and trying not to cry. I didn't have time to grab my cane, so this is all in slow motion.

I'm sure there's going to be a pool of blood shortly. The strange dog is smaller than Charlie's head. The neighbor's less than twice his size. And wouldn't you know, he sniffed them both, wagged his tail, and trotted back to me like "Gee, Mum. Isn't this fun?". The neighbor lady greets me like this is all a normal day's walk, and I brought Charlie inside and just collapsed for a while. If I survive the next hour, I may be able to laugh about it.

they do scare us for we think that is the end of them being part of the family and then yes it is just like no problem ...they think all is okay ...so scary ,sorry for the scare ...we do love our fur babies and yes they can give us a heart attach not they want to but it is so scary for us ...hopefully you can find someone to put up a stronger cable so this doesn't happen again ...take a big breath and give him some love and hopefully can relax...love and our happiness is great no matter how we get it ...love sometimes is very stressful...

Hi NorasMom! From one dog mom to another, I feel ya! Your pup sent you on quite the adventure this morning! Glad you both survived. And I'm sure when you catch your breath, you'll have a good laugh over it! What would we do without our crazy fur babies? 🐶🤪

I could FEEL every second of your ordeal. One or another of my crew will do something much like what your Charlie did, and poor gullible Mommy will follow us, calling our name over, begging us to come back! Almost always, Johnny, these days!🐾

The last dog I had (such a mutt that even the vet was guessing what mix of breeds she was) was an escape artist. She'd get out and then make my son chase her all over the neighborhood. Sometimes she'd let my son almost catch her, but then you could see it on her face "Pshyc!" and she'd take off again. She was fast too. She could regularly outrun greyhounds. She'd start races at the local dog park and she was always the fastest one of the lot.

Oh, I am so glad you are ok. What an experience! It could have turned out much worse! Don't you know the small dog told his mom, "Ok, I am done. I have stared death in the eye. Let's go home NOW." 😅
