Common Sense? Rare Commodity

Does anyone else feel as though the people around them have lost their common sense? I have tried to be patient, but it appears that people are getting less and less sensible. Please tell me that I am not alone in this feeling! Love to all, Kelly πŸ€—πŸ€—

It's the heat. Brains get as scrambled as eggs on a hot pavement.

That must be the answer!

What is common sense, Amore55 ? That’s a rhetorical question. :-D

I've thought that for years. I was in various forms of customer service in my past life, but I was blessed for most of them to be in specialized fields with a specific customer base. Aside from the occasional looney who had to be escorted off the premises, I dealt with reasonable people. And then I started working with the general public. I felt like I was an anthropologist on field assignment and should have been sitting in the corner taking notes on what I was seeing. I cried myself to sleep for the first few weeks, and I haven't been the same ever since.

I think the pandemic has made everybody more tense. Nobody has any patience for each other.

There's book smart and there's common sense. Unfortunately they don't always go hand in hand...

Oh, I completely agree!

I agree absolutely.

I never thought I was a particularly good housekeeper but the number of things I've had to tell carers amazes me, like:

don't put wet things on wooden furniture

put the cap back on the toothpaste

use up the old ones before starting the new packet

don't leave potatoes on the worktop, put them in a cupboard or they go green

don't boil eggs in a non-stick pan, use the plain one

don't use metal tools in a non-stick pan use a wooden spoon

I feel like I'm turning into my mother talking to me when I was 5 - except I have to be polite and say pretty please like I'm asking them to humour my eccentric whims. Grrrrrrrr.

... then this morning the egg cup I use every day went missing. One of the carers found it in a black bag outside the door, thrown away with the egg shell. It's got a built-in dish for putting the shell in, I've never seen one for sale like it, I've had it for 30 years. It's lucky it's bright orange or she might never have found it. That sort of thing drives me crazy.

I have some like that! I bought them in Germany.

I used to have 2, one white, one orange, plastic, oval. They were left behind by the previous occupants of the last house I lived in so I've no idea where they came from originally. The white one cracked years ago. One of my vegetable knives, that I've had since I was 17, has also disappeared. And someone went though my kitchen and threw out all the food while I was in hospital, even cans and packets that would have been OK for years. I only wanted them to get rid of meat milk and fruit,There's a few other things that no-one can find. I know it's just stuff, and worse things happen, but I wish people showed more respect for my property.

I once heard that there's a word in Japanese for when someone does you a favour and you pretend to be grateful but really you wish they hadn't. We need that word in English.

Yes, absolutely! If you find it, please let me know. My mother and daughter did that with the food a couple years ago while I was at a doctor's appointment during a really bad relapse. I had no income and was buying groceries on $20/month. I was so upset.

Of course, I had to investigate! The Japanese word is arigata-meiwaku. Translation in English is β€œ thank you, annoying β€œ or β€œ unwelcome favor” ! Very funny. I’m glad that I now have learned something new.

Do you mean comments like "I can't believe you think it is wrong that people are pooping on the sidewalk? You offended me!" I call these people the offended ones. Unfortunately it is more and more common... I just can't make sense of it.

I can't even begin to enumerate the various ways people have violated common sense . It is scary & costly & beyond imagination. It has nothing to do with Covid. It is the human conditionHave mercy on us.
