No Sense of Direction

I have always had a poor sense of direction - even in my high school building. However, lately it is a lot worse. I sometimes do not know what street I am on when riding in the car and yesterday we went to a casino that we frequent that had just built on and remodeled and I almost felt overwhelmed. Does anyone ever experience this?

Hi SueAb

Sorry you are having that overwhelming feeling. I definatly have trouble knowing the streets while riding as a passenger. I gave up driving a couple of years ago and the knowledge of once familiar landmarks and street signs used to get somewhere are fading away. I know I would be overwhelmed if I had to drive again and that is a scary thought to me. I can easily become overwhelmed by many things like: big busy stores, tasks requiring lots of brain power, multi tasking , socializing, etc. I also notice I am much more easily overwhelmed on a bad day versus good. I don't know if this is the kind of feedback you're looking for, if not someone's reply will hit the mark. Have a stress free remainder of the day! FiddleStyx

I think some of us don’t handle incoming data as well as we used to. Short term memory can be a problem, so navigating new territory can also cause us trouble. I’ve even felt a little disoriented once or twice coming out of stores that have more than one location and feeling as though I was surely at a different one.

I love the way you phrased this: “some of us don’t handle incoming data as well as we used to.” I shall have to borrow that—thanks! I guess that’s what the neuropsychologists call “slow processing speed,” but your words make it easier to explain.

(I know this is an old post but it popped up in my feed.)

greaterexp, I can really relate going out the wrong door at a mall. I was certain someone had stolen my car after I had walked the entire parking lot . I, too, had exited the wrong door!

I remember reading something on not being able to remember where you are. It did say that this might or will happen what I remember the article stating that you should have a paper 🗺 map with you. They do have binder map books of individual states. I know this because my husband is a truck driver, I believe book stores and even Walmart my sell them. This would be a good thing to have in your car. I hope this will help you.

Be careful.
