MRI: everything you want to know and more

I was reading mermaid52490 post about MRI and the discovery of meningioma and thought about another consequence of getting diagnosed with MS for the newly diagnosed.

Here it is:

Once you get diagnosed with MS, you'll most be subject to regular MRIs, at least at the beginning until they figure out a treatment that might work for you.

So be ready for everything else that the MRI will find that is not related to MS. Your body (head down to spine) will be scrutinized in detail, with all kinds of warnings popping up. Mine revealed clogged sinuses, compressed vertebrae (C3 to C5), enlarged thyroid (now on yearly watch) ...

The bad news is this might get you worried for nothing.

The good news is that if there's something else wrong with the top part of your body, it will show up.

I have had the same experience. I’m grateful the radiologists are so thorough in their reports but there are times I want to say “stop finding stuff!” As a result of their thorough reporting and my neuro’s diligence, I had a thyroid nodule biopsy last year after 4 different radiologists commented on an enlarged nodule. I made a deal with my neuro after the 3rd MRI that had the same comment, that if a 4th radiologist said the same thing, I’d give in and have the biopsy. I’m now diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thanks to all of that but it’s mild thankfully.

I also know how badly screwed up my cervical vertebrae are too thanks to the same thorough radiologists. 🙄

YES!!! Stop finding stuff! My thoughts exactly. But then again if they find something really early it can be dealt with before it becomes a big enough deal where it might be life threatening, so there is that

True but did I really need to know about how much my cervical spine is aging and out of alignment? Makes me feel like I’m falling apart more than I knew. I knew about the lesions there but not the vertebrae. I think it may have been caused by some of my falls. I am a card-carrying member of the MS stunt team after all. 😆

omgoodness.. YES! I think the herniated discs that I have were likely caused by the work i did. You would normally find me with my head under the hood of a car or truck but i also was doing all the heavy lifting associated with changing out truck batteries and also truck tires as well..

When I was in 6th grade I had half my thyroid removed. 47 years later what was left had tumors going down my neck. Was so grateful my MRI found that! If they had been cancer it would have been caused early, perhaps saving my life. Fortunately it was not cancer but I was relieved to have the last of it out. So it's not a bad thing, in my book.

Oh man.. i know this to be a fact.. LOL. It was thru the initial cervical spine MRI's that i found out i had 4 herniated discs in my neck.. the one between C5-C6 is so bad it causes the bone to impinge on the cord slightly which, I now know, is what causes the electric shock feeling to run down my shoulder and the back of my arm. LOL.. I also at some point found out i have a herniated disc in my lumbar spine.. L4 i think.. not sure when i found out about that but there was something going on that necessitated a lumbar scan and thats when it was discovered. After awhile i guess you start to feel like you are under a microscope. That isnt necessarily a bad thing always.. but it can feel annoying at times for sure

My contention is, if u test, u will find something, that something may or may not be relevant to the disease or symptoms

I’m with you - mri found thyroid nodules (get them scanned yearly and already been biopsy ) but as thyroidism is similar to ms and my levels are good trying to just wait it out for removal.

Found sinus issues as allergies got worse over the years vs better.

It’s bittersweet getting the news but it’s better to know than not….or I hope so.
