Steroids and your serotonin

I'm talking about serotonin not melatonin. Just something nice figured I would ask and see if you run into the same problem I did. I was prescribed steroids to hold me over until I start my new medicine. I haven't been on steroids for a long time and so I was able to go through a situation I wasn't ready for or remembered. I started my steroids and it was great. I was able to gain some strength that I had lost long time ago. And as I was on Master lights I felt really good. But then it hit me a day or two after I quit the steroids. Extreme depression so I began to do a study of what this might possibly be cuz I felt like crap and I hate his life I hated everything. And this is what I found out is that when you take steroids it wipes out your ability to create serotonin and in turn comes the downfall of your feeling of life in general. And so I asked anybody gone through this after taking a dose of steroids? I did quick study and found out what I could do to get out of this funk. I found out that vitamin b and fish oil with some serious exercise would help. So I went to my supplement regiment pulled out some sublingual vitamin b and threw it in and within 2 to 4 hours voila it helped thank goodness. So today I will try and exercise and also add some CoQ10 that also helps your serotonin levels after steroids. Again I asked has anyone ever gone through this situation? Everyone have a good day and good luck and be careful when you text steroids to keep your serotonin levels up.

I took steroid pills before taking Lemtrada (or, was it before a colonoscopy?) and I remember having to gradually ramp-up the dose and ramp back down. I didn't have any issues and I hope that you are doing well now.

wow, thx for sharing this! i had depression and rage issues on steroids, but i was on them on and off for a year. i also had crushing depression when i finally got off them. this info would've helped a lot. you'd think the drs would share this, but they don't seem too versed in looking at the whole person. this is why it's so important for us to be advocates!

i'm glad you found relief. stay strong.🤗

Good to know! I haven’t exactly experienced this, but steroids make me feel terrible a few days in. I’ll try to add extra vitamins next time to see if that’ll help.

This is the reason steroids shouldn't be used long term. I was on steroid eye drops forever and was fighting the eye doctor to at least reduce the ridiculous dose he put me on. The eye drops totally exacerbated my MS to the point where I could no longer walk without assistance. The eye doctor told me to take them for the rest of my life. Well, I fired him.

I don't think I ever had the steroid pills, but I had steroid IV's at home many, many times. I don't recall anything except the big burst of energy around the second day, when I would clean everything, paint rooms in colors I would never choose , and lots of strange behaviors. The puffy face of course, when the course was over. I don't do that any more! I do remember having to take potassium afterwards for some reason?????
