Gut linked to dementia, Parkinson & MS

I found this article particularly interesting. We are what we eat so it should not be a total surprise. Does this mean that those of use who MS are also signed up for Parkinson and dementia (just kidding)?

Your gut microbiome may be linked to dementia, Parkinson’s disease and MS

Not to make light of something serious but I often use this...in my way of twisting words...to my husband to explain why I need all the sweets I can get. I am working on being sweeter since you are what you eat. He doesn’t find it amusing, either.

It's a fascinating area (and I'm not referring in any way to the somewhat over-enthusiastic "candida overgrowth crowd", as they've taken their beliefs a step too far without any decent scientific evidence to back up their theories). There's some really interesting research going on into the microbiome and the effects it's thought it could have on health - apparently one of the simplest ways to improve your collection of "gut buddies" is to simply get heaps more fibre in your diet. Cutting down on sugar and processed foods/drinks is also known to help. Even in these relatively early days of study in this field it's known that a faecal transplant (aka a poo-fusion :) ) of the right bacteria can save people's lives in some cases of intractable C-Diff and that is being used already as a treatment in some cases.

Thanks! It is a topic that has fascinated me for awhile. I have MS and my brother has Parkinson's. Ozzy Osbourne was recently diagnosed with a version of Parkinson's called Park II, and his son has MS. So this is an interesting possibility!

You may appreciate some of the studies on fecal transplants and those diseases you mentioned also! I use to have a type of IBS, at least since age 12, so I can agree with that much personally. If you are super curious, most insurances will pay for a stool analysis.

I stopped M.S by resetting my gut? I got so bad that I went "comatose" every day after eating anything, even a fried egg, nothing else. It lasted all day. So I stopped eating. I was good till I ate. When I ate at dinner, away I went to wonder wonder land. What I learned was, if I only "ate" fruits and veggies juiced via a juicer, I did not go to that comatose place. I did that till dinner, when I ate regular food, and away I went, to la-la land. I eventually went to vita-mixing to get more bulk/fiber.Handled that. Eventually added in lean meats/fish/seafood in small amounts compared to the fruits and veggies.....Now great! Avoid all processed foods especially with those containing things you can't pronounce or understand what xyx-ztd even is. Maybe that was a gut re-set that worked!

Yes, my D.O., or was it the vet? Had me bring in stool samples. I think it was both.

Never anything except all was okay. Regardless of diet.

there is more and more research on the link between gut and brain. I found that sticking to a healthy plant-based diet helped a lot. no sugar, no dairy.
