Hello my fellow kind ms community

I was thinking of starting pilates since its supposed to help with your core, strength, balance etc. i want to join a class since its more cost effective but any recommendations on whether i should let the instructor know i has ms? ive read online hat some instructors can be discriminatory or exclusionary of people with disabilities.

I appreciate the discourse.

Pilates is brilliant. Even what seems like simple exercises will have you feeling the core muscles working the next day.I did pilates through our MS society. Definitely say you have MS, remember no one has to do all of the exercises if the body won't allow it at the time. You do what you can. Enjoy.

I do pilates once a week through the Shepherd Center MS Wellness Program. It's virtual mat pilates on the floor. It really helps.

That sounds nice I have mat at home too usually use it for yoga. can you share a bit more about that program? is it easy to get into virtually? is it cost effective?

I've never done pilates. In fact, when I first glanced at your post, I thought it said "Pirates for MS", as though the pirates got together and took up a collection. Arrr! 🤣

Seriously, though. I think you should tell them. They might be able to help you better. If they're discriminatory, that would suck, but at least you would know that you were in the wrong place and would know not to waste your time at that particular place! Good luck, and good for you for going outside of your comfort zone to be more healthy!

I used to do Pilates, it can be intense, and is awesome for core! Most instructors that I used to know would love to know that you have MS so they don't focus their encouragements to do more on you if you are resting and can't do more in the moment. Or so that if you are having trouble they can check on you. That said, there are those out there that discriminate, but as previously stated in another comment, you probably wouldn't want to be in that class anyway.

Is there an option for you to try the class? There used to be, in some gyms and studios, an option to try the class once to see if it is a good fit for you before you pay for a full class. Or it was like that where I used to work, many years ago!

great idea MSFlea. I found a pilates club that does allow you to try a class free, staying hopeful ☺️

I have been doing yoga and pilates mix with youtube for sometime now but will be joining a class (when I move) I would inform the teacher. If you are doing it through a rec center or gym you can talk to someone "in charge" so to speak and see who they would recommend would be the best fit (as they usually have multiple classes) However, most teachers are kind and aware and will talk to you and either ask if they should be aware or just let you handle it. They have to be aware of issues (to a degree ) anyways. So best to inform so if you over heat they know how to best help. Hope that made sense.

I would say the same thing but especially for a club. And can still point towards the right person. Because, gyms have trainers but clubs seem to be a bit more tight nit and since they focus on one thing (sometimes a couple) they are more apt to being more personable. I could be wrong. Just don't be afraid/ashamed/....Just go in there and kick ass and if they have an issue than they don't deserve you or to be an instructor. 👍🥰
