Hi Friends-I’m wondering if any of you have experienced more MS nerve pain or had a relapse after a surgery? I had my gallbladder removed last Friday and the first two days were really hard. I had lots of pain around abdomen region where the 4 incisions are and had trouble walking around for a few days and that’s normal. However, the last two days I’ve had WAY more nerve pain that burns all over my body. It’s the burning, needling pain on my back, arms, legs, and head. I have nerve pain everyday anyway and take GABApentin, but this is more intense. I took an Ibuprofin tablet and it brings it down a notch but not much. My surgeon prescribed OxyContin/acetaminophen tablets to take for pain after surgery, but I haven’t taken any yet, because that’s for pain around abdomen area which is tender, but it feels ok now. They doped me up enough with morphine on day of surgery and next day. So, I’m kind of leery to take that.
I left a message for my Neuro to ask if it could be a start of a relapse or just my body healing from surgery. I’m a bit concerned.
Thanks for your help! Nikki

nicoly3467 I think there must be a reason that I Read Emily's post to our Health Unlocked MS chat room. Clicked on it and here I am. I just had my 10 day post surgical check-up this morning! I had a total left hip replacement on Feb. 3. The first night I barely slept 15-20 minutes. Yes, I started MS symptoms on the 2nd day, mostly my legs, especially the left leg. Tingling, trying to spasm. wriggling my toes, and doing foot pumps in hopes of avoiding a full on spasm (Charlie Horse) The doctor and hospital had a full chart of my MS Symptomatic meds. My schedule of what to take and when. They wouldn't even let me advise them of what med to take and when. Even when they brought the wrong meds at the wrong time, they wouldn't listen to me about the schedule. Even now at home, I'm having all the symptoms all over again today from having a long day. I do hope you get some relief soon. My doc says I could use up to 10 Gabapentin a day and trusts me to use my own judgement. I also take baclofen, but don't take too much of it as it would make me too sleepy!
So sorry Nikki that you are experiencing such burning pain. It could be that the ms is shocked at what you have gone through and needs a few days to settle down. If it gets worse please consult your neurologist and let us know how you are doing. Blessings Jimeka 🙏 🤗
If I understand what happens during any surgery, some nerves are damaged and have to repair themselves. I think it's a slow process and some may be permanently damaged. I've had two major surgeries (2002, 2018) to repair badly broken bones. Both have been marked by nerve pain that varied from electric shocks, to burning, to numbness, to hypersensitivity and many other variations. At the site of the first injury, I still occasionally get electric shocks; at the site of the second, I still have a variety of sensations and low level pains, only occasional stabbing. So, my understanding is that this is normal for me. I am fortunate that it is not as severe or widespread as yours but it is always present.
This will sound crazy, I know, but I am in the habit of talking to my pain. Not out loud, but when an injured site sends a message of strong, unbearable pain, I send a silent message back, reassuring the site that all is well, nothing is happening to it now (as I might to a frightened child, you're okay, nothing is going to happen to you, I'm here, I'm taking care of you.) This works for me almost all the time. Somehow it seems easier to do this than to fight or resist the pain. And yes, I know how weird this must sound.
So sorry you are suffering. I have had a couple of surgeries but no problems with MS. Remember everyone is different.
Yes, sounds like inflammation Opiates are not recommended but to make surgeons/dentists feel better. ANTI inflammatory is better and plain ole ICE packs on incsions. i also wore a lumbar back velcro wrap to support spasming muscles for MS and post surgery. put the ice packs inside wrap over underwear. Walking helps healing but NO lifting , lots of rest and you'll get past this.
Watch what you eat some foods add to inflammation.
Personally I think, u are right . I had a spinal fusion along with a Total Knee replacement(TKR) 6 months later in 2018.
This is the first time I lost my marbles. I didn't go to the hospital but recouped @ home. Wouldn't recommend that!! My labs should have been drawn IMMEDIATELY & MRI or CAT scan to see if"anything lit up. Also to see if PML could be a possible cause.
