Very Inept Therapist!

When we moved to a Kansas it was very stressful. I have never talked about it here I believe, but I have bipolar disorder. About 8 years ago a therapist I saw in Salt Lake put me on a Lithium. It is a dinosaur of a drug. Well, my therapy team here immediately took me off the Lithium. Bear in mind I have suffered with horrible tremors and spasticity for just so many years. As soon as they took me off lithium, virtually all my tremors stopped, I mean 99% !!! The med was causing my “MS” tremors!

What I want to know is what would you do? I have been advised by even one of my pastor friends to seek some compensation, this therapist never got my name right in 8 years, gave me incorrect meds at least twice. Please offer opinions/advice. Sorry for the rant. Oh and all these years I have had to take Klonopin to stop the tremors! Thanks, Kelly

I don’t know where to begin but I think I would seek legal advice and go from there. I wish you the best for what ever decision you make.

well, dear Kelly, I think you should weigh you options very carefully. Yes, your previous therapist was probably incompetent. Yes, your tremors stopped when you were taken off the previous medication. BUT Utah and Kansas are some distance apart. Each state may have differing rules, regulations, and laws. Legal assistance and expert medical testimony are pricey. Finding the right legal team might be difficult. The Utah therapist might never pay a judgement in your favor. This could drag on for years. This could sap all the pleasure you take from life. Perhaps a compromise would be to write a long and scathing letter to that therapist (cc'd to the appropriate licensing authorities in Utah) and consider yourself fortunate that s/he did no long term harm. That's my 2 cents worth.

goatgal, those were the same thoughts I have had. I can write quite scathing letters when needed! I am not looking for monetary compensation. My ex-husband sits on the board of Professional Licensing and has already presented it to them to investigate. Apparently, she has many, many complaints against her. She is 68 I believe and my guess is she will retire into the sunset. Thank you for your level-headed comments. I am sorry to be so out of touch, I miss our newsy notes. Love, Kelly xx

I agree wholeheartedly with goatgal . The stress of a lawsuit would very possibly cause you many problems and provide little satisfaction, except to your lawyer, who would gain financially.

I'm so glad you are off that medication, and doing much better. Are you taking something to replace the lithium? Any side effects?

Thanks for letting us know about this. You're in my prayers, as always.

From all that I've read as well as my personal experience, stress can have devastating health consequences: make MS worse, raise blood pressure, damage the heart, affect the digestive tract, etc etc etc. I am so glad the tremors stopped, that Kelly/Amore 55 is off the medicines that caused them, but in the last year she has moved twice, experienced the death of someone dear, and begun a new relationship. The last thing she needs is a worsening of her MS caused by the stress of a lawsuit.

Amore55 I'm glad that the tremors have stopped for you. A lot of doctors prescribe Lithium for bipolor. My ex was on it for the longest time..until it became toxic to him and his family dr had to immediately take him off it and refer him back to his psych that prescribed it so that he could be put on something else.

Like MS, there are various meds out there to help treat the different types of bipolor-some meds work for certain people and not for others. I would work with your dr to find the right combination of medicine that will work for you :)

Keep us updated when you can!

I am not a lawyer but I have been working in the legal profession for a long time. In order to sue someone, you need damages. All the medical expenses you incurred. Good if you saw a psychiatrist about your misdiagnosed MS.
