I now live in east texas so i have no idea what wud happen if the power went out here. We have a mid size generator that i have no clue how to use but i know a lot of places sell those generators that can power ur whole house.....π€·πΌββοΈ
Live in NY, and get some lake effect snow. Right now it is 24Β° with a feel likes 2Β° it's colder here than Anchorage! My brother loves to tell me!ππ€£
If power goes out for any length of time, ppl show up here. I have gas heat, and my vent is huge! So I get heat! It doesn't happen often... Knock on wood! π€πβ
We just completed our move to Kansas and one important thing Cary got from his Momβs house is a huge generator that can power our entire house. Plus we are putting in a wood burning stove with a cook top. It sure is cold and windy here! But at least the move is over, it almost did us in. Kelly xx
We all get in one room and close the door. Get under multiple blankets.
The first winter back here in Central VA, the power went out during an ice storm. Because I love in the country, this means no lights, no water (the well pump is electric), no heat. There's a little cabin on the place with a wood stove, a table and a bed, so the dogs and I moved there. I built a fire, brought out the camping stove, used a lantern for light...and everything was fine until about 3 or 4 in the morning when I became so cold that I thought I would never get warm again (the logs in the wood stove had burned out because I hadn't fed the stove all night.) The power came on about 10 the next morning and some hot tea warmed me up until the house was cosy again. Then, this November, the power went out again about 4 in the morning and was out for about 12 hours. Fortunately, it wasn't bitter cold...but that did it. As of yesterday, I have squandered my children's inheiritance on a standby generator and propane tank. It will come on automatically when the power fails and power the whole house for days if necessary. I feel only a little guilty...and rationalize it by noting that it is the same cost as two months in assisted living (locally)...and I'd much rather be here, taking care of myself than subject to the rules/regulations and indifferent care of assisted living.
Our furnace broke last winter and we went 4 days with no heat until we got a new furnace installed. Boy did we bundle up! (I'm in northern Indiana.) We could see our breath inside. Our kitties slept under our covers. Our dog has long fur but she did stick to her bed! So glad when that heat came on!
When i lived in Michigan we always had a wood or coal burning stove as a backup heat source. My dad preferred the wood burning stove. The coal burning stove that came with the house didn't last the first winter we lived there. The coal dust got everywhere and in everything and made the snow turn black. The wood burning stove he said warms you up twice. Once when you cut the wood and once when you burn it.
I remember growing up we had a coal furnace and one day it actually exploded.black soot came up through the floor grates and everything being covered with coal dust,we were fine and we got a gas furnace after that
wow,we both lived through exploding furnaces!yours was much much worse.what a nightmare for your dad.and of course the rest of you
