I will be on checking in with you all as I can from the laptop and library pc. Right now, I've got to take apart the desktop and get it in for repair. Also removing all files that I can from the laptop.. We may have lost our wills, directives. All kinds of sensitive info and programs, security vault passwords, etc. Gonna be hectic few days. Lyn

PC Crashed
Oh no CalfeeChick ! I'm so sorry to hear that!! Did you have anything backed up by chance? Hope you are able to get some of your stuff back. Good luck.
Jessie
I'm sorry. Technology is great when it works, but is such a pain when it doesn't. Hang in there!
Hang in there!
CalfeeChick Lyn, so sorry to hear. I used to work in the computer field. If you are able to keep your hard drive, but can't access it, there are ways to recover the information you want. If you know anyone that works with computers, they maybe willing to help set something up to help you recover your information. You can use shareware or even freeware to get it off your hard drive. Techs will charge you lots of money but you can do it your self. two sites I used for information to do this are;
1. techsupportalert.com/ - they also have "howto" articles to help and tons of freeware
2. snapfiles.com/freeware/ - better at ratings and reviews
If you have any questions free free to pm me. ~terry
Thank you so much, not sure how I would get info off hard drives if I can't start pc.. will research more.
you can get a connector from your laptop to your hard drive and plug it into a usb port, use the software to access information from the hard drive and transfer to your laptop or other usb drive.. if you like I can do some research with details to you via pm if you like. let me know
MS_Indestructible perhaps you could send me info on the connecter. We are taking pc into local shop tomorrow. Both hubby & I having off days. Me with OA probs, him with cold.. Missed the cloud class. will try pc research.. I'm typing with one hand, 20lb. kitty resting on other arm!! πΊπ»π
Data recovery can be very expensive. However, I will post links to both the software and the adapter you will need. I am in the middle of emailing my doctor and will post here asap for you
no problem.. appreciate the help.
This process requires you to remove the hard drive from your computer. [I don't know your computer experience so if you are not comfortable doing this, find someone who can help.] Use the connector I've listed below from Amazon. [I purchased this last year. It will allow you to connect your drive to your laptop via a usb connection]. You can then use this device to connect it to your laptop.

Then use this software [you can use the free version for what you need to do]. Download the software and install on your laptop.

I listed this backwards. Install the software before connecting the hard drive. Be real careful when handling the hard drive. You don't want to drop it or bang it down on the table or such.
Let me know if this helps or I can further help. ~terry [Male not female]
Good luck to you CalfeeChick! I know how you feel, MS_Indestructible has great info!

Wish I had it instead of my cousin taking my computer for what felt like forever!
CalfeeChick - I have had that happen twice in the last 5 years only my data wasn't recoverable. After the 1st time I got an online backup for my computer. I chose Back Blaze because it's very inexpensive, only about $60 per year. It runs in the background and every time I make a change on my computer it backs it up. I still have to reload the software on the new hard drive but then all of my backed up data can be downloaded to the new hard drive and I am up and running again, usually in less than 48 hours and with no extra cost. It has been such a relief to know my info is still there. The 1st time my hard drive died I had just finished scanning 2500 + family photos, many back to the 1800's and also scanning about 1000 old family slides. I had to re-scan everything. The last time it happened I just had to download them from my backup. It took a couple of hours because there were so many and because I scan at a high resolution but that was much quicker and easier than re-scanning again. It took about 3 months to scan that many images and slides each time.
wow, that had to be heartbreaking. I'm going to do research today and I'm downloading everything on my laptop to cd's. Taking into local shop tomorrow. Everytime I take a pc to Staples, they say they can't repair and I wind up having to buy new and lose prior info. Takes days to set up a new pc.. going to check Back Blaze now. Had never heard of that one. Thank you!
