A medical report on Airborne addressed some concerns, specifically regarding its large amounts of vitamin C:
There are some concerns. First, there is no conclusive evidence that this product or any of its ingredients prevents colds or shortens their duration. Second, the adult tablet contains 1 g of vitamin C, and the directions for use advise taking 1 tablet at the first sign of a cold and repeating the dose every 3 hours as necessary, but no more than three servings a day. Vitamin C in doses higher than 1 g increases oxalate and urate excretion and may cause kidney stones.[10] Third, the safety of this herbal extraction combination has not been established. And with herbs and dietary supplements in general, we only have the manufacturersโ word on the label for whatโs in them.[11]
Class actions and settlementsEdit
The former makers of Airborne had been accused by the FTC of using false advertising[4] in its marketing and making unproven claims[12] that it could help ward off harmful bacteria and germs and help prevent the flu and the common cold.
A class action lawsuit was filed against the former owners of Airborne Health, Inc. (and other defendants) alleging that Airborne falsely advertised certain therapeutic properties, including the ability to cure or prevent the common cold, when marketing products under the Airborne brand name. Defendants denied any wrongdoing or illegal conduct but agreed to settle the litigation.[13]
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) participated in the class action lawsuit against Airborne.
On March 4, 2008, the former owners of Airborne Health Inc. agreed to pay $23.3 million to settle the lawsuit.[14]
On August 14, 2008, a press release from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stated that the former owners of Airborne Health, Inc. has agreed to pay up to $30 million to settle FTC charges. According to the FTCโs complaint:
"there is no competent and reliable scientific evidence to support the claims made by the defendants that Airborne tablets can prevent or reduce the risk of colds, sickness, or infection; protect against or help fight germs; reduce the severity or duration of a cold; and protect against colds, sickness, or infection in crowded places such as airplanes, offices, or schools."
The FTC complaint also states that the company's former owners and founders, Victoria Knight-McDowell and Thomas John McDowell, "made false claims that Airborne products are clinically proven to treat colds."[4]
Going to Caribbean, jamaica, cozumel and cayman island. Cannot wait. I didn't know about kidney stones and since I have had 11 stones I will NOT be taking airborne, thanks Morllyn
I don't take any of those (emegen C and the like) because I believe it's overpriced and poorly sourced vitamins. Mega doses of vitamin c have been shown it some studies to do nothing for cold prevention. Prevention is what I'm assuming you're going on about here. Vitamin D mega doses, eating mushrooms and onions, hand washing, and adequate sleep have prevention value....I'll look around in a few and post you some articles. We all could use a refresher in ick prevention right now!
U can read the amounts of vitamins and herbs on every box. It tells you how much vitamin C is in it. If u feel thatโs enough, then donโt take more. You have to beleive what the manufacturer says about any product on the market. Use your own judgement. Airborne is not a drug. Just like emergen c and any other supplement or vitamin you choose to take. Such bs, beleive what you want. Take it or donโt. Use your own mind!!!
By my 5th injection, I had flu-like symptoms so bad I wanted to go to the emergency room. With every injection it got worse. I quit after 5 injections. Not a drug for me.
jkdavid99 , there has been a terrible flu going around here and people who get it have been horribly sick. One of my friends got it and it turned into double pneumonia immediately. My husband and I flew to Alaska on Dec. 31 and we did take Airborne. I had never heard that I should not take it with MS. As far as I can tell, I had no effects from it. And I also took it on the way back. I did not get any URIs, either, but I can't say it was the Airborne.
