Gabapentin 300mg

I have had burning feet at night - just like walking on hot concrete - and started Gabapentin 300mg last night. I slept for 11 hours and felt drunk and dizzy when my husband woke me up. That went away within 3-4 hours. Does anyone have input on this drug?.

SueAB my husband was on it years ago and he never seemed to fully wake up and had trouble thinking while he was on it. Many people on this forum seem to take it without any trouble. I guess it affects everyone differently.

Thanks, I am very sensitive to meds - had to stop Baclofen, Provigil and Ampyra.

When I take it, my balance is always an issue.

Hi!

I have been on Gabapentin for about 2 1/2 years . My advice is to stick with it! It took me about a week to get used to the drug. I felt like I was hit by a truck in the morning but that DOES eventually go away after a week or so. I take 1800 mg.

I also have burning sensations on my feet, legs and patches here and there. I was initially put on the drug well before I was diagnosed last year. It has helped with my weird pains that move about up and down my legs.

Hope you find relief for your discomfort! Give your body a chance to regulate to the medicine because it is helpful! Best of luck!

Amy

I am prescribed 600mg at bedtime but I break the tabs in half and take 300mg. It helps the pain in my legs, it helps me sleep, and I've noticed it helps anxiety. But if I take the full 600mg it greatly affects my balance the next day. I'm sensitive to baclofen too. Everything I take that helps pain or spasms tends to affect my walking and balance, so I have to find a dose (usually half what was ordered, or less) that helps the symptom and doesn't mess me up. When someone first starts gabapentin the dose has to be tapered up over a few days or even weeks if a larger dose is needed so they can adjust to it. I also found if I took a bigger dose it seemed to affect my memory. You just have to give it a few days and find the dose that works for you.

Hi SueAB

I've prescribed gabapentin to many. Start low dose (100mg at at hour of sleep?) and wean up to effective dose.

Often the "drunken" feeling improves after 5-7 days

I have no personal experience with gabapentin but did take Lyrica briefly. It made me a zombie ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

erash, I have 300mg capsule and afraid to cut it in half. What do you think?

erash profile image
erashโ€ข in reply toSueAB

If it's a capsule, u can't cut in half. If a tablet, ask your pharmacist if split (don't think 300 comes in tablet --at least not the generic).

Or perhaps ask your doc to write for gabapentin 100mg take 1 to 3 tabs/caps each evening.

That way you can wean up to the 300mg. Realize that 100mg may or may not be enuf to relive your neuropathy but at least you can get used to the med slowly as you increase it.

I have a Rx for 200mg 2x a day. I have it delivered as 100mg capsules so that I can adjust the dose if I want.

At that does I have no side effects and I find it does help keeping down random nerve firing that gives me little shocks to my legs.

Hi SueAB,

I take gabapentin, have been for a few years. I take 800 mg two times a day and 1600 mg two times a day. When I take the 1600 in late afternoon and at night, I do get a little sleepy, but nothing like knocking me out for 11 hours.

Hi SueAB see what they say about Lyrica? I think <~~ notice word think, they do kind of the same thing. Lyrica worked better for me, til it didn't.

I can't take baclafin either, but someone mentioned Botox for spasticity, so lm asking my Neuro about that.โ˜บ

Good luck. And call your Dr if it continues. Let me know how you do!

Jesmcd2 and SueAB

Lyrica made me a zombie but like the gabapentin, start low dose and wean up to effective dose. Lyrica also becomes more tolerable after 5-7 days.

I have been on Gabapentin for about 4 years, and the effects that you are feeling will go away after about a week or so. I had the same feeling when I first started taking it, but the doctor assured me it would go away, and to my surprise after about 2 weeks I was completely back to normal. The effects were minor compared to the burning and hurting I was feeling in my legs and feet. Good luck to you.

This one took a few dayz for my body tolerate, but I've been on it for over a year. It really does manage my symptoms well. When I first tried it, I had problems, but literally years later, I'm really glad I tried it again. I now take it 3x a day... MonSter (MS) for 30+ years myself, hate taking pills (take several morning, noon, night), shots 3x per week... Oh well... BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY!!! giggles... xo Cj

My hubby took Gabapentin and didn't have issues.....I think a lot has to do with the dosage. His doctor calls him a 'cheap drunk' because a little of any medication goes a long way with him. He had a fairly low dosage and it worked well for him.

My husband has been on it with no side effects. would not know about balance issues since he is wheelchair bound, He take 600 twice a day. Absolutely helps. Give it a chance. A day or two is not enough time, Good Luck

I've been on Gabapentin 300mg dor about 3 years. It takes about a week to 10 days to get adjusted. You'll feel drunk and get some of the best sleep in the meantime. After that, the burning and tingling fades. For me, I only feel the burning if I've been doing a lot of walking or I'm really tired. It also helped with my hand tremors. Hope this helps

I take 900mg a day of Gabapentin for my back & have had no side effects. Maybe you need to start with a lower dosage & build up to your current dosage so as not to get the side effects you are experiencing.

I have taken it for years but I started out on a low dose and then gradually over the years have built up to 900 mg a day. I take a nap every day, too. My MS has made me feel loopy sometimes but I didn't associate it particularly with Gabapentin/Neurontin. This was the first MS drug I took that actually helped me with my symptoms. Good luck to you

SueAB my bf is on 800mg of Gabapentin, it was upped from 600mg and it make him really tired after taking it. It took about a month for his body to get used to the new dose and now it doesn't bother him at all. Try to give it some time for you body to get used to it, hopefully it will get better and you won't feel like you want to sleep the day away.

Jessie

I take 1200 2 times a day. I get the feeling like the feeling you get when you're hand falls asleep. I have no side effects. Been on it for 5 years

@SueAB I tried gabapentin. I titrated up to 300mg 3 times a day to see if it would calm my essential tremor. It did not help, so I titrated back down and got off the med. I did not have any side effects. I guess it is like so many meds. in that it effects everyone differently.

I don't know where I'd be without gabapentin SueAB . I take 600mg 4 times a day. No side effects. Just relief from various symptoms.

Hi. I took 600 mg of Gabepentin every 2 hours while I was awake for years. I had extreme amt of severe pain in left side of my body, But I started out slowly and worked my way up to that amt. Once your body gets used to it, it should stop with those side effects. Like someone suggested, probably a week or so. Now I wish it would put me to sleep, cause I have trouble sleeping!
