This is so personal! Surely, I can only share this with my MS family! Here it goes...
My right toes are curling... I mean in the worse way! It's like I'm having to attempt to walk on toe fists. My toes are long, and this is really becoming uncomfortable.
Please tell me I'm not alone. HELP!
Any suggestions?

I wonder if it has anything to do with spasticity. What does your neuro say about it? I would think that maybe physical therapy and spasticity muscle relaxers may help.
Hi kj, my toes curl when the ms throws a fit, but they relax after a good nights sleep. The right foot has curled so many times when relaxed they look half curled all the time, so fun when trying to put shoes on. Keep us posted hugs 🌈
I also have a problem with my toes..... they stretch out. However it doesn't last long Once both feet stretched out terribly. My neuro called it dystonic Posturing. He gave me Baclafin. Good luck to you. Speak to your neuro as soon as you can. Hope you're feeling better.
Kj9601, hey, it's Fancy1959,to your curling toes post. Ahhh, we discover new tortures that MS can heap upon us almost daily! My toes have never been affected by muscle spasms or contractions but my left hand has. It got to be where I had a hard time washing my hair. I would reach up to massage your ship shampoo through it and find out my left hand was nothing but a fist. There wasn't any pain involved on my end but it sure made everything I did rather difficult. So I got creative. I am not one to sit idly by and let MS run over top of me. So I went to a trunk of old toys my boys used to play with and found a pair of those round discs boards with velcro on it that you would throw a ball back and forth and catch it on the velcro balls. I took it into my physical therapist and told her what I was doing and she loved it as long as I didn't do it so much as to hurt my hand worse. I put my right hand and look back on this thing the circle in the left hand which is contracted goes on the front and I gently spread the fingers out and push on the hand in order to extend the length of the tendons that are contracting. And Wallah over the course of a couple weeks I made a big difference with my left hand. It's much easier to open up all the way in to use an open position because I stretch my tendons back out.
Kj, I would think your toes could even be easier to fix when the tendons curl under. With your shoes and socks off I would just find a place, and what comes to mind is a step and put your toes on the step and then stretch them out using your weight on the steps. You're going to have to play around with this and get it down to what's comfortable for you but there be no reason I still wouldn't work simply to put your toes on it and kind of pull yourself up a little bit with your toes. I hope that makes sense to you I'm not sure it even make sense to me but try it and I think you'll get the gist when your toe start straightening out. Just be careful not to hurt your feet or your toe tendons. Like my physical therapist said start slow and easy and then progressed from there.
Please let me know if you try this and if it helps. I think many of us have our own little quote unquote secret recipes that we use to work on fixing problems we have dumped on us by our MS. Remember together we are stronger.
I often wondered if it was just me, but my toes actually curve outward on my right foot. It surely can't be helping with my balance.
I've had horrible cramps in my feet that usually hit during the night when I'm sleeping, but sometimes during the day. Sometimes my toes head in directions they weren't meant to go and it's really freaky looking not to mention painful.
I bought magnesium gel. It also comes in an oil. It's topical and you rub it on and it takes 2 or 3 minutes to soak in and start working but it releases the cramping. Maybe this would help you too. I have Baclofen but the magnesium seems to work better. And you don't have to wait for the curling or cramping to start. If it's been plaguing me a lot I'll put it on before I go to bed and I don't wake up with my foot going distorted and cramping.
Fortunately there is a store near me that carries it. They carry organic foods and lots of natural products. I bought Life-Flo brand. If you can't find it near you, you can probably find it on the internet.
My second toe is longer than my big toe and since the MS has gotten worse and I have more burning and weird sensations in my lower legs and feet, that darn toe rubs on the bed covers and socks and really hurts. I got bunion surgery 20 years ago and begged my podiatrist when he did the bunion surgery on both my feet to also shorten that toe, but he wouldn't. It's not actually a hammer toe, it's just longer and uncomfortable because that toe wasn't made to take the brunt of the contact your foot has with everything. But he wouldn't do it because I don't have hammer toes. I'm thinking about seeing if I can have the toe shortening surgery now . It's a very common surgery these days. Maybe it's not too late for me. That toe drives me crazy.
Good luck and let us know if something works for you!
Not that I'm aware of, but haven't had my ancestry checked through DNA. I know I have Welsh and French ancestry. I've read that about Greeks and Welsh also, that the long second toe is more prevalent in those lineages. Interesting. People used to say when I was little that a long second toe means you're bossy, which in my case certainly wasn't true. I was a shy introvert. So much for that folk tale.
hahaha my dad told me this as a little girl that I too with toe would be a boss in the family..my husband was not in laughter. One date said no...not boss just ugly toes! Last date there! hahahahah
Hello Kj9681 I am sorry you are having toe problems. I have had 2 forms of toe problems, when I have over done it for the day my toes will curl under an force me to walk on the tops of the toes. This usually forces me to fall if I am no near something that I can reach to hold myself up with my arms. That Is why I use crutches to get around because, I can never tell when it will happen. The other toe problem is when my toes keep bending backwards, if I sit to long. Like at dinner or when I am driving. I have top stop and walk around and rub my toes to get this to stop. I have found Aspirin to be the only effective relief. Good Luck.
OK, I thought I was going out of my mind withthis exact symptom.I was afraid of a stroke.I had my shoes on the first time it happened.OUCH.After months..it went away and now it is a hand out of the blue...maybe those plaques hit when they hit but scary.So..you are not alone.
