Itchy Scalp

Does anyone know what I can take for the continuous itching of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp? It's exacerbated by MS and nothing I use helps. Attarax helps some but mainly there's nothing. it is so miserable!

Hello, I suffered for 18 months with you condition, bad dandruff, itchy scalp and hair loss. Doctor prescribed Dermatology crime that didn't work. I went to see a Trichologist who after a few months eased my condition slightly. I went back to see another GP who prescribed Betacap which improved my condition dramatically after two days. After a few month I still use it once a day and think I will continue to do so. My condition was caused due to stress and iron deficiency , I took a course of iron supplements and try to reduce my stress levels.

I highly recommend Betacap and getting a blood test and investigate why you have the condition, if you haven't done so already. I truely sympathise with you but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I do help this message has helped and wish your condition to get better.

Kind regards

Diane

Thank you so much Diane. My dermatologist says this condition is caused by my MS and other autoimmune diseases, Lucky me huh. He's not been very helpful anyway. He prescribed Fluocinonide .05% solution. My scalp couldn't handle the stronger oil. It's somewhat helpful but no magic bullet. The Betacap sounds like it would be very helpful. I wish it was available in the US, the shipping charges from the UK equal the price of the medicine. I do appreciate you taking the time to respond and your advice re Betacap. Your message has given me hope.

Best,

Marilyn

Thank you. I just get it at the back of my head just above the neck. I've tried doctors who tell me to use an anti dandruff shampoo. I tried putting olive oil on the scalp. My latest thing is to wash the area every day. Probably have to try the doctors again in the end. Might try Betacap, although I bear in mind that everyone is different.

That's where I get it the worse too. I use Head and Shoulders shampoo which, remarkedly, is very helpful. I have to wash my hair everyday to keep the itching under control. I've found doctors are not very helpful.

Thank you for that. My wife tells me to stop picking it and she is probably right. I think if I don't pick it then it might be healing underneath the same way one keeps picking a scab and the skin doesn't heal underneath. The washing has helped so we shall see.

Do not use any product on your scalp that has chemicals and detergent in it as it will dry the scalp out more. Could try coconut oil rub in over the scalp, leave for an hour then wash out in warm water.

I have used the coconut oil and it made my scalp itch horribly. My dermo had recommended it also. I have stopped using most otc shampoos and am now using Nizoral and tea tree shampoos. They help quite a bit. I'm reconciling myself to the fact that this condition is something I'll just have to live with. Thank you for your response.

Yes I feel the same I haven't had much luck either of getting rid of it completely. If I come across a magical cure will let you know. Take care.

Also I bought a Phil Kensley Hair Book that recommended mixing half mint mouthwash and witch hazel for relief also, to only use plastic combs and brushed and not rough brushes that are harsh to the scalp. I tried this and it works alongside with the Betacap. Also, try to refrain from scratching! Regards Diane

Hi Diane,

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you put the solution of witch hazel and mouthwash all over your scalp? Right now I'm using T/Gel shampoo which helps some. I've found the best thing I can do is not scratch, but boy it's hard! I haven't got the Betacap yet but will do this afternoon. Maybe I'll get this done yet.

Yes the solution is applied to the scalp it's cheap too as I have spent hundreds of pounds trying to find solutions. Also try body shop ginger shampoo and Tony Moolsley Juniper shampoo the latter expensive but my favourite. It's is so hard not to scratch and totally sympathise with you. Have been advised not to have spicy foods, no cheese, no white wine and, although hard, avoid stress! Kind regards Diane

Hi again, I can't find the Beta Cap here in the US. Put out another SOS. People are going to get sick of me asking about shampoos, especially when they've already given me suggestions.
