Is this OCD or normal?

New laptop intrusive thoughts

Hi everyone, I bought a new laptop as my intrusive thoughts kept telling me my old laptop was not good enough anymore and I wanted the ‘fresh start’ feeling, so I bought a new one.

Problem is as I’m sure every OCD sufferer understands, the thoughts then turn to something else. Now I’m worrying about this.

The keyboard has a back light and the keys all have a warm white coming through. On the ‘Home’ key, or ‘Left’ key, there is a tiny bulb to the side of it which is bright white and keeps catching my eye.

Now I’m worried that the laptop is going to blow up in my face and I need to return it as faulty and replace it.

What should I do? I’m thinking the person in the shop might think I’m a bit odd worrying over something so small - and I want to challenge my OCD, but I can also return it within 30 days if it’s faulty and I don’t want it to get past that date and then the whole laptop blows up in my face.

Advice appreciated. Thanks!

If you do what an OCD-free person would do in the same circumstances, you’ll feel good about yourself even if it may be difficult at times. If you feel good about yourself, you’ll be more likely to keep making wise decisions because you have something to lose. On the other hand, if you give in to your irrational fears (laptop may blow up because a key lights up), you may experience some relief at first, but your self-esteem will suffer in the end. People with a low self-esteem will likely keep making questionable decisions because they have nothing to lose.

(Prospect Theory predicts that individuals tend to be more careful when so far, they made wise investments in their lives, and more reckless when they made a series of poor investment choices)
