It’s time for Taboo Tuesday! I am Krista Reed OCD specialist in Wichita, KS and IOCDF advocate here to give you taboo only topics!
Let’s continue with this month’s theme: Intrusive Attractions- the fear of becoming attracted to someone or something you really do not desire.
Check out last week’s post about intrusive attraction compulsions if you missed it! Today I want to chat examples of in vivo exposures that individuals in treatment might work on.
Keep in mind- exposures are valued based and not for shock value.
Examples are:Fear of becoming attracted to your child or parent? Hug your child or parent and do not reassure the obsession. Fear of accidently having sex with your pet? Be around, don’t avoid, the animal. Concerned that you will become attracted someone or something unless you pray correctly? When the thought pops up, avoid praying; prayer is to be meaningful to you- not meaningful to your OCD.
Exposures are not to be practiced with a medical professional who is not properly trained in OCD; harm can result if someone were to attempt this. So ask your therapist about their training and if they are not trained in ERP or ICBT, search elsewhere.
Check out next week’s taboo Tuesday as I discuss imaginal exposures examples for treatment.
Remember- Stigma and shame die where communication and validation live ❤️
